sentenceofthenovel:Itisatruthuniversallyacknowledged,thatasinglemaninpossessionofagoodfortune,mustbeinwantofawife.Inthisstatement,Janehascleverlydonethreethings:shehasdeclaredthatthe main subjectofthenovelwillbecourtship and marriage,shehasestablishedthehumorous toneofthenovelbytakingasimplesubjecttoelaborateandtospeakintelligentlyof,andshehaspreparedthereaderforachaseinthenovelofeitherahusbandinsearchofawife,orawomeninpursuitofahusband.ThefirstlinealsodefinesJanesbookasapieceofliteraturethatconnectsitselftothe
