A news reporter interviewed Olga Kotelko, a 96-year-old champion(冠军). She is an amazing old lady. Here is what she said about herself.
After 70 years of competitions, I have over 750 gold medals. And two years ago, I took part in my last competition in a group aged from 90 to 94. I made 26 world records. And I know these records will be broken by someone else in the future.
I did three sprints(短跑)—100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter. I did three jumps. I did long jump, high jump and triple jump. And I did five throws—shot put, discus, javelin,hammer and weight. I also like swimming, but I have no chance to try it.
Some people often say that they are too old to try new things. But I think our age is just a number. What makes the difference is not how old we are, but how we get old. Even when we are in our nineties, we shouldn't think we are old. I mean, if we're active and we're working and we're enjoying, that's how we grow.
I think genes(基因) play an important role in our life and then, of course, we need to practice in order to have skills for any special activity. But I think, it's our spirit that may play the most important role in our life.
I never stop trying my life. Some people think it is time for me to stop at a certain point, but I am enjoying my choice and I am having fun. Why should I stop? I am doing what I like. I like travelling a lot, and I just want to keep on going. I will keep on going until the last day of my life. That is when I'll have to stop.

　　When I was eight years old, my mother told me to put my coat on because we were going to go somewhere special. Usually, that meant we were going to see someone important. I would at least get a new toy. I asked which one it would be that day, and she told me that I would get something better than a toy. She said I would get “access(通道) to a world of toys.” I had no real idea what she meant. Did that mean we were buying a toy store?
But we did not end up at any toy store. Neither did we finally see anyone we knew. Instead, mother pulled her car into a parking lot in front of a building that looked like something out of the past. It didn't have a modern look at all.
We took stone steps up to the entrance. Only then I found out what this place was, because there was a sign that said “Marcy Public Library”. We pushed the door open, and my mother led me to the front desk. “I'd like to get my daughter a library card”, she told the man behind the desk. He asked her to fill out a form. “What kind of books do you like to read?” he asked. I was too shy to reply. I only smiled. “Well, you'll find it out in time,” he said. I do not remember what I picked out that day, but I know that in the years that followed I read through books on history, books of poetry, and books about art. The library opened up a world that I never knew that day.
So my mother was right. Getting a library card was like getting the access to a world of toys.
