Famous English action movie actor Jason Statham will star alongside Dwayne Johnson, “The Rock”, as Deckard Shaw and Luke Hobbs respectively, as in their previous appearances in Fast and Furious films. Directed By: David Leitch Runtime: 120 minutes Studio: Universal Pictures Arctic, September 1, US In the movie Arctic, a man trapped in the Arctic is finally about to receive his long awaited rescue. B Paparella first became aware of foster care (寄养中心) in elementary school when her parents were considering adopting a child. The plan didn’t work out, but Paparella often found herself thinking about that girl. At 16, Paparella visited Summit County Children Services in Akron, Ohio, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What do these young people need most?” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home!”  say Paparella. The idea of moving into an apartment and not having a bed to sleep on or a sofa to sit on pulled at my heartstrings. Paparella contacted her parents’ friends, asking if they had spare furniture to donate. A local furniture store, Chez-Del Interiors, offered free warehouse space and its delivery truck. Social workers provided delivery. In between lacrosse games and college applications, Paparella --with her dad’s help --added furniture delivery person to her résumé. Watching the receiver’s faces when they receive a bed, a couch-whatever-would change her in a way. Paparella remembers delivering a gold lamp to a woman and watching her polish it lovingly, getting rid of dust and fingerprints. To think that this lamp which hadn’t been thought about in years now brought so much happiness to somebody was amazing.” Paparella says. Today, Paparella has given furniture to nearly 200 young adults across six Ohio counties. As word has gotten out, Paparella has received donations from people who have bought new furniture and want to get rid of their old pieces. People who are moved, and people who have heard of her work on social networking sites. She’s convinced these contributions give the receivers hope and confidence. 24.Why did Paparella visit Summit County Children Services? A.She considered adopting a child. B.She planned to take care of the children there. C.She wanted to know the life of grow-ups there. D.She intended to persuade her parents to help the children. 25.What does the underlined sentence “That struck home!” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Moving. B.Shocking. C.Amusing. D.Disappointing. 26.What do we know about the woman who received a gold lamp? A.She didn’t like the dusty old lamp. B.She loved the gold lamp very much. C.She made little difference to Paparella. D.She owned many different lamps in the past. 27.Which word can best describe Paparella’s character? A.Humorous. B.Honest. C.Imaginative. D.Devoted. C Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people were always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in various experiments. In one of the experiments, I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, asking them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper, saying, “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and you will win $50.” This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it. Unlucky people are generally more nervous than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings concentrating on finding their perfect partners and miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people are skilled at noticing opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition (直觉), are open to new experiences, and adopt a never-say-die attitude that transforms bad luck into good luck. 28.What’s the purpose of the author’s research? A.To discover what luck means to people. B.To find lucky people and unlucky people. C.To distinguish between good luck and bad luck. D.To figure out why people are always lucky or unlucky. 29.Why did the unlucky people miss the message in the experiment? A.There was too much information to be read in detail. B.They were too focused on looking for photographs. C.It took too much time to go through newspapers. D.The words were too small to be noticed. 30.What leads to lucky people’s good fortune? A.Their ability to spot opportunities. B.Their ability to become relaxed. C.Their ability to communicate. D.Their ability to make friends. 31.What’s the key message of the last paragraph? A.What lucky people are looking for. B.How lucky people generate good luck. C.What lucky people can do with opportunities. D.How lucky people transform bad luck into good luck. D “Federal weather forecasters are predicting a‘near normal’number of storms this hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November l. Between nine and 15 named storms are predicted to form in the Atlantic this year, ”said Neil Jacobs, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “Of those, between four and eight are predicted to become full-blown hurricanes, with winds capable of removing shingles(木瓦)and taking down power lines, ” Jacobs said Thursday at a news conference to announce the forecast. “And between two and four storms are expected to strengthen into so-called major hurricanes, with winds strong enough to break trees and tear off roofs.” Gerry Bell, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA, said people shouldn't be fooled into satisfactions by the word “normal”.“Nine to fifteen named storms are a lot, ”he said. “Two to four major hurricanes are a lot. So the key message is:We're expecting a near-normal season, but you need to start getting prepared for the hurricane season now.” This year's outlook is shaped by two competing meteorological (气象学的)phenomena. On one hand, the climate pattern known as El Nino (厄尔尼诺)is happening this year, which generally prevents hurricane activity in the Atlantic. At the same time, the water at the surface of the tropical Atlantic and the Caribbean is warmer than usual. That warm water acts like an engine for hurricanes, fueling their creation and making them bigger and wetter. While ocean temperatures change under normal climate conditions, global warming is also causing ocean waters to get hotter. The overall global surface temperature has already risen more than 1 degree Fahrenheit compared with pre-industrial times. That suggests increasing hurricane risk, as big and wet storms become more likely. 32.How many storms may take place at least this year? A.4. B.9. C.15. D.24. 33.What can be the effect of the full-blown hurricanes? A.Blowing off shingles. B.Destroying houses. C.Causing earthquakes. D.Taking down dams. 34.What can we know from Gerry Bell's words? A.People were often fooled by the NOAA. B.There will be less major hurricanes this year. C.There has been a near-normal hurricane season. D.People should prepare for the coming hurricanes. 35.What is the direct cause of hurricanes? A.El Nino phenomenon. B.The increasing population. C.Environmental pollution. D.Warmer water of the ocean. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Improve Speed Reading Skills Speed reading is one of many skills that can improve your reading comprehension and shorten your study time.___36___ Look at groups of words, not single words.___37___ However, if you can get into the habit of reading groups or chunks of words at one time, then you can read much faster. Start by trying to look at a group of three or four words at once, then work up to looking at an entire line of works. Focus on words that give the sentence meaning, such as the nouns and verbs and pay less attention to the filler words, such as a, the, and, etc. Scan for keywords. Scanning is a highly effective way of extracting answers from a text without really reading it. If you know exactly what you are looking for﹣a name, a date, a statistic, or a specific word-you can find it quickly by skipping over large chunks of the text. To scan, first visualize the word, number, or phrase you would like to find.___38___ The information you are looking for should pop out at you. ___39___ You can train yourself to read faster by timing yourself as you go. Start by getting your base time. Set a timer for fifteen minutes, and speed read as you normally do.___40___ Do not count the words, just the pages or paragraphs. Record your figures: for instance, you night write "15 min/6.5 pages." A.Race the clock. B.Cheek your comprehension. C.Here are some speed reading techniques. D.Then, run your eyes rapidly over the text. E.When the timer goes off, cheek to see bow far you have got. F.If you read a text one word at a time, then this will slow your reading speed down. G.One of the reasons is that you have to pause to understand what a passage is saying. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Being jobless for the last three months, I am upset nowadays.
