一、概念：表示过去发生的动作或存在的状况，常与表示过去的时间状语连用，
如：Yesterday, last year, three days ago, in 1990, before liberation …
二、构成：由动词的过去式来表示。
（一）规则动词的过去式
1. 在动词后加-ed或-d
worked stayed wanted lived
2. “辅音字母＋ y”结尾的动词先将 y 变为 i ，再加 -ed。
如: studied, tried
3. 重读闭音节或r音节结尾而末尾只有一个辅音字母的动词，先双写辅音字母再加 -ed（以x结尾的词除外），如：
stop—stopped, plan—planned, permit—permitted
（二）不规则动词的过去式
1. begin—began drink—drank
come—came eat—ate
grow—grew run—ran
know—knew say—said
win—won speak—spoke
take—took write—wrote
get—got
2. 变词尾的 – d 为 – t
build—built lend—lent
send—sent spend—spent
3. 与动词原形一样：
cut—cut put—put
cost—cost hurt—hurt
shut—shut
4. 变-ay 为-aid （少数动词）
say—said pay—paid
5. 采用不同词根：
come—came
be—was (I, he, she, it )；were

　　 一般过去时表示的动作或状态都已成为过去，现已不复存在。
　 Christine was an invalid all her life.　
　 (含义：她已不在人间。)
　 Christine has been an invalid all her life.　
　 (含义：她现在还活着)
　 Mrs. Darby lived in Kentucky for seven years.
　 (含义：达比太太已不再住在肯塔基州。)
　 Mrs. Darby has lived in Kentucky for seven years.
　 (含义：现在还住在肯塔基州，有可能指刚离去)
