阅读理解 A 体裁 主题 词数 限时 记叙文 人与自然·动物保护 330 8分钟 (2019·江西五校协作体联考)I believe in holding onto traditions because they helped our family flourish (兴旺) in a new country. But this concept is more concretely expressed this way: I believe in feeding monkeys on my birthday — something I've done without fail for 35 years. In the Burmese jungle, monkeys are as common as pigeons. But in America, feeding monkeys means violating the rules. As a kid, I thought that was cool. I learned English through watching bad television shows and expected that I was the chosen warrior (勇士) sent to defend my family. Dad and I would go to the zoo early in the morning, just the two of us. When the coast was clear, I would throw my peanuts to the monkeys. I never had to explain myself until my 18th birthday. It was the first year I didn't go with my father. I went with my friends and arrived 10 minutes after the zoo gates closed. “Please,” I begged the zookeeper, “I feed monkeys for my family, not for me. Can't you make an exception?” “Go find a pet store,” she said. If only it were so easy. That time, I got lucky. I found out that a high school classmate trained the monkeys for the movie Out of Africa, so he allowed me to feed his monkeys. Once a man with a pet monkey suspected that my story was a ploy — that I was an animal rights activist out to liberate his monkey. Another time, a zoo told me that outsiders could not feed the monkeys without violating the zookeepers' collective bargaining agreement. Once in a pet store, I managed to feed a marmoset (狨) being kept in a birdcage. Another time, I was asked to wear a special suit to feed a laboratory monkey. It's rarely easy and, yet, somehow I've found a way to feed a monkey every year since I was born. 1.Why has the author fed monkeys all these years? A.To please his father. B.To develop a new hobby. C.To celebrate his birthday. D.To keep up his family tradition. 2.How did the author and his father feed the zoo monkeys? A.They did it in a secret way. B.They pretended to be warriors. C.They did it with the help of friends. D.They got the zookeeper's permission. 根据第二段中的“feeding monkeys means violating the rules”及第三段第三句“Dad and I would go to the zoo early in the morning, just the two of us.” 3.What does the underlined word “ploy” in paragraph 5 mean? A.Joke. B.Trick. C.Excuse. D.Adventure. 根据画线词后的“that I was an animal rights activist out to liberate his monkey”的描述可知,养宠物猴的人认为作者是借此来释放他的猴子的,所以此处画线词意为“花招”,故选B。 4.How is the fifth paragraph mainly developed? A.By providing examples. B.By giving explanations. C.By following time order. D.By making comparisons. 根据第五段的内容尤其是该段中的关键词“Once a man” “Another time” “Once in a pet store”可知,该段主要是通过举例的方式展开的。 Asking for help is a sign of strength rather than weakness. In American culture, the independent individual is seen as their ideal. As the University of Missouri at St.Louis states on its website under the heading Key American Values, “Americans have been trained since very early in their lives to consider themselves as separate individuals who are responsible for their own situations in life and their own destinies.” The value also makes them think they can do everything themselves, and makes them feel badly about asking for help when they need it. And when it comes to work situations, when they think about asking for help there, sometimes they fear that a request for help would make them look inept. While this has always been true for men, many women in the workplace have felt the need to try twice as hard as their male colleagues and do twice as much to get just as far and to prove their worth.Sometimes when we think about asking for help, our inner voices tell us, “See, if you admit you can't do this on your own, they'll see you for the imposter (骗子) you really are.” But the fact is, even though individualism is on the rise, we can't do everything by ourselves and we shouldn't try. Apple founder Steve Jobs once told the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association about the power of asking for help, and how he “never found anybody who didn't want to help me when I asked them for help”.He said, at the age of 12, he called Bill Hewlett, cofounder of HewlettPackard, on the phone after getting his number from the phone book and asking him for spare parts so he could build a frequency counter (计频器).And Hewlett agreed and offered young Jobs a summer job assembling frequency counters. “If you're afraid of failing, you won't get very far,” Jobs said. 5.What is the first paragraph mainly about? A.What key American values are. B.Why Americans refuse to ask for help. C.Asking for help is a sign of strength. D.Americans are responsible for their life. 6.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “inept” in paragraph 2? A.impolite B.identical C.incompetent D.inappropriate 解析:选C 词义猜测题。 7.What can be learned from this US cultural phenomenon? A.Americans suffer a lot from mutual distrust. B.Americans see weakness as a sign of strength. C.Americans should learn to build up confidence. D.Americans lay emphasis on individual values. 8.What can we learn from Jobs' words in the last paragraph? A.Don't hesitate to ask for assistance. B.Be brave to try whatever you want. C.Failure is the mother of success. D.Learn to cooperate with others. Fiftyfive years ago, I got into my father's car to take my driver's license exam.
