Do you give money to homeless people? Do you offer your seat to someone in need on a bus? Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have low self-esteem (自尊) think less of their good qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true, reported The Guardian. The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychology professor from the University of London, UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population. In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate (评级) their own niceness. Then he got people to answer questions like “Do you give directions to strangers?” and “Have you ever donated blood?”. The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped others carry heavy shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood. In another study by psychologists from universities in Chicago and Virginia, US, some people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been more or less changed to make them appear more attractive(有吸引力的). When asked to pick the unchanged pictures, people usually chose the more attractive ones. So, why do we think we’re nicer than we actually are? There are many theories (理论). A popular one says we unknowingly cheat ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to ourselves or each other. How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback (反馈). Compare others’ opinion toward yourself with your own and you will see a clearer picture. 1.Where does the passage most probably come from? A.A magazine. B.A grammar book. C.A dictionary. D.Confident people don’t like those with low-esteem. 3.Which of the following about Freeman’s study is NOT true? A.Freeman is a British psychology professor. B.About 98 percent of British people think they’re nice people. C.The people answered some questions about niceness. D.One fourth of the people helped others carry heavy bags. 4.According to Para 5, people chose the more attractive pictures of themselves because ________. A.they were not happy with their looks B.it was hard to tell small differences C.they lied to themselves without knowing it D.they wanted themselves to look good 5.What does the story mainly talk about? B 14、In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They’re not really bad guests, but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some western counties, it appears they are not nice guests. And western guests sometimes look rude (粗鲁的) in the eyes of Chinese guests. In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest. My wife’s mother, a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In most North America homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask, “Is it OK if I smoke?” “But, don’t be surprised if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.” In our culture, if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are not a rude guest. Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your home, don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift. In China, you probably won't need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected. 1.Many foreigners think that Chinese hosts are the _________in the world. A.best B.worst C.most natural D.most difficult 2.If the writer’s guests want to smoke in his house, what will he probably say? A.It’s OK if you smoke here. B.Let’s smoke together. C.Sorry, you can’t smoke here. D.Smoking is a bad habit. 3.What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “adapt to” in the passage? A.think back to B.get used to C.look forward to D.keep close to 4.What is the main idea of this passage? A.Foreigners should learn from Chinese. B.Hosts must do things in the guest’s way. C.Western hosts are always nice to guests. D.People should understand cultural differences. C 15、It’s reported that more and more people choose cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of Bike-sharing Plans, pioneered by companies like Ofo and Mobike, has brought the trend to a new level. People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphone. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “last mile” problem, which refers to the final leg of a person’s journey. “In places where the underground doesn’t extend (延伸到), where it’s difficult to change from one kind of transport to another, it’s so easy to get where you want to go with Mobike,” Hu Hong, 29, told AFP.She pedals to her faraway job in Shanghai. However, the schemes have also led to problems such as illegal parking, vandalism (故意破坏) and theft. “Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation and provides a user-friendly experience,” said Liu Xiaoming, vice-minister of transport.“But it’s a combination of online and offline business.Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems.” To deal with these problems, the company came up with the idea of encouraging people to return the bikes to stations by rewarding free time for their next rides. Now, Chinese service operators are also trying to address these problems. For example, Mobike sets a 100-point credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior.Once a score drops below 80, bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan. 1.How can people unlock the shared bikes? If you don’t, you may want to read the book We Can Do written by Moshe Kai Cavalin. It might change your mind. Moshe Kai Cavalin is a 14-year-old American boy. He is about to graduate from UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) this year. Before that, he had already gotten a degree (学位) from East Los Angeles Community College in 2009. Recently, Cavalin published (出版) the book We Can Do. In this book, he talks about how to achieve things we want, by keeping yourself focused (专心的) and trying your best to do everything. He says this doesn’t need genius (天才), just hard work. Cavalin says being called a genius “has always bothered (使烦恼) me… People need to know they don’t have to be geniuses; they just need to work hard and they can achieve anything. If I can reach the stars, others can reach the Milky Way(银河,天河).” The idea of writing a book came from a teacher named Richard Avila at his first college. Cavalin says Avila inspired (启发) him to write a book to explain how he succeeded, so he could inspire other people. It took Cavalin four years to finish the book.
