Hello, class. We are living here in this small village. But do you want to live in a city? Why do you want to move to cities? You want to move to cities because cities offer you lots of exciting things. In cities, you can go to parks, go to supermarkets, go to libraries, go to cinemas. You can do lots of interesting things there. But do you know there are lots of problems in big cities. Life is not so pleasant in big cities. Then what are some of the problems? Let’s go to page 90 to find out. ■Read the passage. On page 90 is an article called Visions of the city. It is Parkville. Now start reading it. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. Difficult to run a big city ■ Retell the text. Next try to retell the text in your own words with the help of the diagram. 50 years ago, Parkville was a quiet country village in the centre of the country. But soon, Parkville became a suburb of Arnwick, a city close to it. The small local school in Parkville closed down five years ago. Students have to go to a school close to the centre of Arnwick. Going to a faraway school adds to the traffic and pollution. Larger hospitals and more doctors, better public transport and fewer private cars are needed in Arnwick. More shops, offices are needed. Running a big city and protecting people from crime is also difficult. So more laws and more police are needed. ■ Close down by talking about Jo and his place. We are going to turn text into a talk. I am the one invited to talk to you something about Jo and his place. And you are going to ask me questions. Shall we start? T: Good morning, class. I am very happy to introduce Mr. Smith to you. Mr. Smith is a professor from Arnwick University. He is here today to talk to us something about Jo and his place. Now Mr. Smith. S: Nice to see you, boys and girls. SS: Nice to see you, too. S: Well, look at the photo. This girl is called Jo. She is 15 years old. She lives in Parkville. S1: Who are these people, Mr. Smith? S: They are Jo's grandparents. The photo was taken when they first came to Parkville 50 years ago. You see it was a quiet country village then. S2: Where is it? S: It is in the centre of the country. S3: What a beautiful village it is! S: Yes, it was beautiful. S1: What do you mean by saying “it was beautiful”? S: It was beautiful because this village isn’t there. S2: Is it gone? S: Yes, it is gone. S4: Why? S: Parkville was close to a big city called Arnwick. Arnwick has a population of about 200,000 people. People from the countryside began to arrive in Arnwick to find jobs and have a better life. S5: I see. The newcomers needed somewhere to live. So the city government decided to build flats around the edge of the city. S: You are right. That’s why Parkville soon became a suburb of Arnwick. S1: What is its population now? S: It now has over a million people. S2: What about Joe and her family? S: They are now living in one of those new flats. And Joe has to go to a school close to the centre of Arnwick, with 2,000 pupils. S3: How long does it take Joe to go to her school by bus? S: It takes Jo an hour to get to school by school bus. S3: And I think this adds to the traffic and pollution. S1: But it's not her fault. She liked her old school. S: Arnwick needs larger hospitals and more doctors, better public transport, fewer private cars, more shops, more offices and more clean water. S2: It's difficult to run a big city like that. S3: And to protect people from crime is difficult, too. S: That’s why more laws and more police are needed. S1: And more taxes are needed to pay for everything.
