About 40,000 people die on U. S. roads every year, and driver errors are linked to more than 90 percent of crashes. But many of the biggest advocates of autonomous vehicles aren’t car companies looking to improve the safety of their existing products. Huge backing for self - driving technologies is coming from Silicon Valley giants like Google and Apple. Those of us who have studied the relationship between technology and society tend to look more carefully at the motivations behind any technological push. In this case, it’s clear that in addition to addressing safety concerns, Silicon Valley firms have a strong incentive (动机) to create a new venue for increasing the use of their digital devices. Every minute people spend on their mobile phones provides data - and often money - to tech companies. At present, digital devices and driving are in conflict: There are serious, often fatal, consequences when drivers use smartphones to talk or to text. Regulators and safety advocates look to resolve dial conflict by banning phone use while driving - as has happened in virtually every state. But the tech companies are taking a different approach. The obvious answer for Silicon Valley is creating an antomobile in which continuous cellphone use no longer poses a threat to anyone. In recent years, the amount of time adults spend on their mobile devices has grown rapidly. At the moment, it’s around four hours a day for the average adult in the U. S. However, that rapid growth is likely to slow down as people run out of time that ’ s available for them to use their devices. Unless, of course, there’s a new block of time that suddenly opens up. The average American now spends about 48 minutes in a car every day, a sizable opportunity for increased cellphone use. So as the public conversation around autonomous cars highlights the safety advantages, don’t forget the tech industry ’ s powerful desire for more profits, which goes well beyond simply saving us from ourselves. 1、Who are responsible for most traffic accidents in America? A.Car companies. B.Tech companies. C.Drivers. D.Self - driving cars. 2、What is Silicon Valley’s motive for promoting self - driving technologies? A.To make more money. B.To reduce traffic accidents. C.To limit the use of digital devices. D.To support car companies. 3、What is the present - day solution to the conflict between digital devices and driving? A.Teaching people traffic rules. B.Improving self-driving technologies. C.Fixing digital devices in cars. D.Banning phone use while driving. 4、What does the underlined phrase “a new block of time” possibly refer to? A.The working time. B.People’s spare time. C.The time spent in the car. D.The time spent on mobile devices. 23.(8分)The announcements that follow inform you of various First Presbyterian Church programs and events to which you are invited. The problem we face is that much of this information seems very interesting at first glance. Actually, much of the information is unimportant, disposable and it distracts(分心)us from more meaningful pursuits. Worse still, when we spend lots of time consuming information from our social media streams, we may find it hard to concentrate on what we’re doing and we have a tendency to forget what we have consumed anyway. A new study from Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology has found that too much social media exposure actually reduces your ability to process information and depletes your short-term working memory. Our working memory plays a critical role in our capacity to filter information and remember what is valuable but it is not a limitless resource. Erik Fransén, a professor in Computer Science at KTH and the leader of this new study on social media overload says this can explain why our capacity for processing information begins to fail when we attempt to stuff more information in the working memory. In fact, when you try to process the information like speech or video, you are going to need partly the same system of working memory, so you are reducing your own working memory capacity. And when you try to store many things in your working in your working memory, you get less good at processing information. It is the periods of downtime of your brain—preferably disconnected from the distractions of your computer or smartphone—that are needed for memory consolidation and transferring important information to your exposure to new information. Besides, you can empty your mind of thoughts quickly to relax completely, go for a short walk or spend s few minutes listening to music. This will help you improve your capacity to process information and increase your productivity. 1、What can we learn abut social media overload from Paragraph 1? A.It distracts our atention. B.It is beneficial to us. C.It brings us whatever we want. D.It keeps us informed of everything. 2、Why does your capacity for processing information begin fall sometimes? A.Much of the information is unimportant. B.You don’t make the most of your brain. C.You’re less good at processing information. D.Your working memory is a limited source. 3、What does the underline word “downtime” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Support. B.Relaxation. C.Increase. D.Loss. 4、Which is recommended to relax your brain? A.Listening to music for a while. B.Thinking over things carefully. C.Taking enough physical exercise. D.Focusing more on the present. 25.(10分)Strongest Female Literary Characters of All Time There are some of history’s most inspiring and great females who can be found on the pages of these novels. Elizabeth Bennet Called “Lizzie” or “Eliza” by her family and friends, Elizabeth Bennet is the stubborn and clever heroine from the 1813 Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. She’s the second eldest of five daughters in the Bennet family and, like the rest of her sisters, she is expected to marry for status and money, not for love. To remain true to herself, she would rather remain single, a concept that was unheard at the time. Nancy Drew She first appeared in the 1930s but remains one of the most iconic female characters in all of literature. Created by Edward Stratemeyer, Nancy Drew wasn’t simply a pretty girl. Instead, the bold, physically strong, and fiercely intelligent Nancy used her superior intelligence—not her looks—to solve a series of mysteries. Josephine March Jo March is the second eldest daughter in the March family and is a central focus in the novel Little Women, published by Louisa May Alcott in 1868. At 15, she is strong- willed, confident, and literary and unlike her sisters, she is outspoken and uninterested in marriage. Jo both struggles with and challenges society’s expectations of how women in the 19th century should carry themselves, making her one of literature’s most daring female characters. Hester Prynne Recognized by some critics as one of the most important characters in female literature, Hester Prynne is the leading character in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel, The Scarlet Letter. Married but separated by distance from her husband, Hester has an affair with a minister and becomes pregnant. 1、Why would Elizabeth Bennet rather remain single? A.She is too stubborn. D.Proud. 3、Who created Josephine March? A.Jane Austen. B.Edward Stratemeyer. C.Louisa May Alcott. D.Nathaniel Hawthorne. 4、What is the right order of the time these females appeared in novels? a.
