Four new chemical elements(元素)have been added to the periodic table. A big decision now lies ahead-elements 113,115,117 and 118 need to be given their official names and symbols. New elements can be named after a mythical(神话的) concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property(性质) or a scientist. The names have to be unique and maintain "historical and chemical consistency". This means a lot of "-iums". "They’re Latinising the name," explains chemist Andrea Sella. "The most recent tradition is to name them after places or people." The places chosen tend to be where the element was discovered or first produced. No one has yet named an element after themselves but many elements are named in honour of important scientists. Albert Einstein was given einsteinium. This can also be a way of righting the wrongs of the past. "Lise Meitner was really the chemist who spotted nuclear fission(核裂变)but she was never really recognised for it because she was Jewish and a woman, " says Sella. "Giving an element a name that reminds us of her is greatly important. " The naming process isn’t quick. The scientists who discovered them will start things off by suggesting a name. But it will be down to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) to approve it. A special division of the US-based group has to accept the suggestion. Then there is a public review period of five months before the IUPAC gets the final approval. Once it’s ready, the name is announced in the scientific journal Pure and Applied Chemistry. Naming an element is not just about functionality. Names are always important. 1、What is the function of Paragraph 1? A.To introduce the topic. B.To present a finding. C.To point out a problem. D.To call for a decision, 2、Why was Lise Meitner mentioned in the naming process in Paragraph 4? A.To praise her. B.To build her reputation. C.To correct the wrongs of the past. D.To end racial discrimination 3、Who has the final say in the naming process of an element? A.The scientist who discovered them. B.The special division of US-based group. C.The scientific journal Pure and Applied Chemistry, D.The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. 4、What is the passage mainly about? A.How elements get their names. B.Why science textbooks are out of date. C.How new elements are discovered. D.How functional naming an element is. 23.(8分)My son has poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹)and he suffered from it a lot. When he was young, my wife and I took him to see so many doctors and got different kinds of treatments. But still, he couldn’t walk like a normal kid. So he was laughed at by his peers for his walking style. His tears burnt our eyes like sulphuric acid (硫酸 ). Then, he became afraid of going to school. He wouldn’t go anymore. One night, my wife had a breakdown and shouted at him, “I tell you, my kid, you might be like this forever. You are a freak in other people’s eyes, and perhaps it would never change. But in my eyes, in your dad’s eyes, you are not a freak! You are not! Even if you are, we love you and we will love you forever!” My son spoke nothing for two days. He didn’t eat or sleep. We could read he was hurt. We hoped something wonderful would fall in our family. On the third morning, he struggled to walk to my car, with his school bag in his hand of course. He raised his head high and hugged me, saying “want to go to school. Nothing will beat me.” You know, from then on, he was never afraid of being mocked or despised anymore. If he couldn’t avoid these looks, he chose to look at them in the eyes. Later, something nice really happened and my son went to MIT. When he was asked how he managed to bear the pressure, he said, “Because of my parents.” My dear fellows, if you care too much about how other people look at you or what their opinions are, you will never become what you want to be. 1、The author’s son was laughed at by his peers, because_________. Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity (长寿) boost seems to come from marriage or an equal relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s, The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm. Even though the odds are stacked against you (the conditions are not favourable to you), marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke. There’s a less pleasant side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouses; death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socioeconomic factor, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms (机制). For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner. A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The best social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: “People are interconnected so their health is interconnected.” 1、William Farr’s study and other studies show that ________. A.social life provides an effective cure for illness B.being sociable helps improve one’s quality of life C.women benefit more than men from marriage D.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity 2、What does the underlined word “compensate” in the second paragraph probably mean? A.pay money B.provide something had C.help recover D.increase damage 3、What does the author say about social network? A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage. B.They help develop people’s community spirit. C.They provide timely support for those in need. D.They help relieve people of their life’s burden. 4、What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.It’s important that we develop a social network when young. B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network. C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span. D.We should share our social networks with each other. 25.(10分)Flaubert had it that “one way of tolerating existence is to lose oneself in literature as in an unending party”.It turns out that reading doesn't only help us to tolerate existence, but actually lengthens it. A recent study by Yale University researchers, published online in the journal Social Science & Medicine, concluded that “book readers experienced a 20 percent reduction in the risk of death over the 12 years of followup compared to nonreaders”. The data was obtained from the study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The study looked at 3,635 subjects, all older than 50,whom the researchers divided into three groups:those who didn't read books, those who read up to 3.5 hours a week and those who read more than 3.5 hours a week. The findings were remarkable:on average, book readers survived almost two years longer than those who didn't crack open a book. The more the subjects read, the longer they lived, but as little as 30 minutes a day was still beneficial in terms of survival. Accounting for factors such as education level, income and health status, the study found that those who read more than 3.5 hours weekly were 23 per
