In fact, of more than 1, 000 people crossing 20 different roads in Seattle, 10% were listening to music, 7% were texting and 6% were having conversations on the phone, the journal Injury Prevention reports and it estimates there was a 5% rise in the number of pedestrian deaths and injuries from June 2022.
The texters were four times more likely to ignore red lights or fail to look both ways before crossing. And it took almost two seconds longer to cross the road. Listening to music seems to shorten the time taken to cross the road, but when they were doing it they were less likely to look both ways before crossing.
Kevin Clinton, from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said, “Looking properly when you are walking is as important as when you are driving, so take care not to be dangerously distracted, whether by mobile phones, listening to music or being caught up in conversations with other people. Road users need to be tuned into what’s happening around them and shouldn’t do the wrong thing at the wrong time. We have always told motorists to look out for pedestrians. Now we are increasingly telling pedestrians to look out for motorists. A change in attitudes, similar to efforts around drunk-driving, will be important to limit the risk of pedestrian misbehavior. ”

Peking opera, known as China’s national opera, is a combination of music, dance and art and is widely regarded as a full expression of Chinese culture. Today, this art form is facing the danger of extinction as the younger generation is mostly interested in pop culture.
A Peking opera project for primary and secondary schools was launched by China’s Ministry of Education. But it has met with a cold reaction from the public. More than half of the 1, 000 respondents from ten big cities expressed doubts about the practical meaning of the project in the survey conducted by the Social Survey Institute of China.
The project plans to add 15 Peking opera pieces into music courses in 200 schools in ten provinces. The pilot programs will last from March to July next year. At present, teaching materials and video tapes are still in production, China News Service reported. The Ministry of Education hopes that the promotional course can help students better appreciate Chinese culture and cultivate a love for the mother country.
The surveyed people do recognize Peking opera as a comprehensive(综合性的)art form and a representative of the traditional culture. They also understand the purpose of the educational project. However, they wonder whether it is necessary for every student to learn to sing Peking opera, when they are already stressed from endless exams.
