They influence our lives in so many ways. They teach us almost everything about living, give us strength of character and make us who we are. It is because of them that we become able to do our duties. The things that we are able to do are actually their gifts to us. Right from taking care of us when we are young to guiding us whenever we need their advice, they are always there by our side. All we can do for them is to give them love and happiness and try to make them feel proud of us. First of all, you need to follow all the good things they taught you when you were very young. It could be about eating healthily or exercising in a regular way, or it could be about helping anyone who needs help. Not make complaints is also a good way. So don't complain about what you don't have. Learn to appreciate (感激) and love what your parents give you; you may not know the struggles they go through in order to give you that. Thirdly, you also need to start making your own decisions wisely and confidently. In other words, take control of your life by deciding what will be good or bad for you. Let them see that you are able to do all kinds of things without asking others for help. More importantly, you should try to be a good person. Be polite and respectful to your family and friends. When they give you advice or a suggestion, you'd better take their ideas into consideration. Try to work as hard as you can and be modest with what you have achieved. Anyway, seeing you grow into a good person will surely make your parents proud. Ⅳ. 阅读理解 A 13、People drink alcohol(酒) in many parts of the world. Some medical scientists say light drinking may even be good for your health, especially for the heart. But they say such health benefits(好处) should be compared to the many health risks connected with alcohol use. Some research suggests that having one to two drinks of alcohol a day may be good for your health. Several large studies have shown that this type of drinking may lower the risk of heart disease and other diseases. A study last year suggested that drinking a little red wine may help lower the risk of breast cancer(乳腺癌) in women. Researchers at Medical Center in California studied 36 women. Each woman drank a glass of red or white wine every day for almost a month. Researchers collected blood samples(样本) from the women two times a month to test their hormone(激素) levels. The next month these women were told to exchange their wine. The researchers found that the women who drank red wine had lower levels of the female hormone than the white wine drinkers. They said red grapes have chemicals that may help to lower the risk of breast cancer. However, recent studies suggested that even a little alcohol may generally increase the risk of breast cancer in women. They found that women who drink four small glasses of wine a week increase their risk of breast cancer by 15 percent. Many studies have examined the harmful effects of alcohol use on the body. Alicia Ann Kowalchuk serves as medical director, saying “Healthy use for adults --- that's men under age 65 --- is no more than 4 drinks in a day and no more than 14 drinks in a week. And for women of all ages, it's no more than 7 drinks in a week and no more than 2 drinks in a day.” She says too much alcohol use has something to do with liver (肝脏) diseases, and many other cancers. 1.How did the researchers carry out their study? It is famous for its yearly migration(迁徙)from the northern part of North America to Mexico, There, millions of monarchs spend the winter together in one small area. This migration is one of the greatest wonders of nature. Yet this behavior has now put the monarch at risk. Every September, millions of monarchs from the United States fly to Mexico. After about two months of flying time, they reach their sanctuary(庇护所)in central Mexico. Then, in the warm climate of private and quiet valleys, far from most human activity, the butterflies create one of nature’s great scenes. They cover every tree with bright color. The show lasts until spring, when the butterflies return north. While they are all crowded together, the monarchs are highly weak. If the environment in those valleys was disturbed, the whole species could be hurt or even die out. That is why for many years scientists who knew about the monarchs’ winter sanctuary kept the location a secret. In recent years, however, the monarchs’ secret has been discovered. Today, the butterflies’ winter sanctuary is crowded with tourists, who disturb the environment. Worse still, local farmers who need more land to farm have begun to take up the area. They are cutting down trees, making it difficult for the butterflies to survive. They should not farm in the monarchs’ sanctuary. People should act immediately to protect the species’ winter sanctuary. Local farmers must be helped so that they no longer need to take land from the butterflies. Tourist visits to the butterflies’ hidden valleys must also be limited. Unless these steps are taken soon, in a few years the monarch butterfly of North America may be just a beautiful memory. 1.What do we know about monarch butterflies? A.They fly to the US in autumn. They say that cat people pay more attention to personal expressions, and they respect individual differences.
