She has resigned from her job as China editor because her employers will not pay her at the same rate as they pay the handful of men who do a similarly challenging and important job. She has resigned because. she refused to go on colluding (共谋) with the BBC’s dishonesty about its failure to give women and men equal pay for equal work. Gracie was recruited to the job, because she had all the talent and skills the BBC needed to cover the difficult international and domestic story of the rise of China. One of the conditions she set for taking it was equal pay with the BBC’s other international editors, familiar names including Jon Sopel in Washington and Jeremy Bowen in the Middle East. Last summer, the government forced the BBC to publish which of the familiar names on radio and TV earned over £150,000. The results exposed an astonishing pay gap. They also showed Gracie that her employers had misled her. Gracie sets out all her efforts to get her bosses to do what they had originally promised her, but they fail to respond adequately. Instead, they prevaricate(搪塞)and offer her a pay rise that still would not have delivered equality. They thought they could buy her off; They thought that the reputational hazard she was running would scare her away from the fight. The BBC is wrong this time! Gracie has chosen to design rather than give in because she thinks that it is her responsibility to stop the BBC doing something stupid. She is fighting for women’s legal rights. Gracie said she hoped she wouldn’t be remembered as the woman who complained about money, but as a great journalist. She is proving that they are two sides of the same invaluable coin. Carrie Gracie’s dispute with the BBC isn’t about money—it’s about dignity ! 1、What do you know about Carrie Gracie? A.She is very strict with her office colleagues. B.She has a good command of China's affairs. C.She was working together with Jon Sopel. D.She has a reputation of covering sports news. 2、What does Carrie Gracie demand of the BBC? A.Equal pay for equal work. B.Better pay for more work. C.Apology for misconducts. D.Response to her complaint. 3、We can infer that the BBC . A.didn’t promise Gracie equal pay with her male colleagues B.dismissed Carrie Gracie due to her demand for higher pay C.was forced to pay Gracie equal pay for doing the equal work D.kept the pay of its familiar names secret before last summer 4、What is the author’s attitude towards the BBC? A.Positive. B.Vague. C.Critical. D.Cautious. B There are billions of people on this planet, and many of us love to eat meat. In 2018 alone, the average American will consume more than 100 kgs of red meat, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). At the same time, the environmental impact caused by meat consumption – waste, animal treatment, health issues and even the greenhouse gas effects – has given rise to a number of startups (新兴企业) looking for ways to fill our growing demand for meat. But can the demand be filled in a sustainable and affordable way? A bunch of companies are not only optimistic but are working to make this happen sooner. All of these companies harvest cells from animals and grow them in a lab. For example, San Francisco-based Memphis Meats is developing cell-based meats in its laboratories by manufacturing fat and muscle cells without requiring any animals. And don’t worry if you’re not a meat lover. Startups such as Jet Eat, which is based in Israel, are working on food products grown in labs that are plant based and produce meats using natural ingredients while still maintaining flavor, consistency and the “overall sensory experience”. As you can imagine, there are plenty of hurdles facing the industry. Educating the public is a big one. Another controversial issue is the labelling of the products. Meat industry trade groups have been pressing the USDA to more strictly regulate alternative meats, labeled as “imitation products”. Many of us have concerns about the challenges facing future generations as our global population swells and the earth’s natural resources shrink. The good news is that there are plenty of companies around the world – like those producing lab-grown meats - who are working to solve some of these problems and make a few bucks in the process. Nothing wrong with that. 1、What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A.Protecting the meat industry. B.Promoting a healthy lifestyle. C.Reducing meat consumption gradually. D.Meeting human demands for meat sustainably. 2、What kind of meat does Jet Eat produce? A.It tastes as good as real meat. B.It is harvested directly from animals. C.It looks like plants completely. D.It contains fat and muscle cells. 3、According to the passage, how can consumers tell the lab-grown meat? A.By receiving public education. B.By referring to the label. C.By observing it closely. D.By consulting the USDA. 4、What is the text mainly about? A.Extraordinary jobs done by new startups. B.Lab-grown meat ready to feed the world. C.Effective strategies applied when shopping. D.The existing threat faced by humans. In a recent airing of "Unsolved Mysteries", there was a young boy who was the victim of the holocaust(大屠杀).He'd been 1 in a work camp for several years and somehow had managed to survive the 2 of his imprisonment. The story was of a boy - now in his sixties - and his quest to find an American soldier who had 3 a kindness to him by 4 some food. It might seem 5 ,but to this child, who had seen nothing but 6 and inhumanity for as long as he could remember, it was a 7 that marked a turning point in his life, for he had lost hope .When he was liberated by the American forces, he was dying. He, 8 needed food. As he was staggering along the road a young soldier 9 down from his tank and gave him some of his supplies. With this one act of generosity, a kind American had aroused the 10 again that there really was some good in the world. And the boy never 11 it. The boy later went to America, raised a family, became successful and worked hard to repay the 12 he had received with his own. Actually there were so many similar acts of generosity that it would be almost impossible to know for sure who the soldier was. We all have a choice: to create more light in the world. As Confucius 13 it over 2500 years ago, "It is better to light one small candle than to 14 the darkness." As the story above so nicely 15 small gestures can often generate huge blessings.
