Mars One,a group that plans to send humans on a one-way trip to Mars, has announced its final 100 candidates. We spoke to two of the British hopefuls. Alison Rigby,35,from East London For Rigby,a chemistry graduate, who currently works as a secondary school lab technician,it is a lifelong passion for space that led to her decision to apply. “Generally the reaction has been pretty positive from my friends and family since I told them I was down to the final 100,but it’s going to be difficult for my mum.I haven’t told her yet,”she says.Rigby explains that when she first applied in 2013,her mum told her she didn’t want her to go. “I am doing this for something better, which will hopefully benefit more people than just staying at home and keeping my mum happy. As for the risk,of course I am scared. It’s something that has never been done before. But we are all going to die,and it’s important what you do before you die,”she says. Clare Weedon,27,from Kent,England “I applied because I want to be able to say I made a difference to the future of mankind,”explains Weedon,a 27-year-old manager. Weedon doesn’t have a background in science, but she is driven by the chance.Weedon’s brother also applied but was not selected for the final 100.“My brother is pretty envious, but the rest of my friends and family are proud and excited.”The only exception is Weedon’s boyfriend, who doesn’t want her to go. Weedon thinks it was her teamworking skills that saw her through this far—in her current job she works as part of a group of four, the same size as the planned Mars One crew. But she’s not pretending a trip to Mars is going to be a walk in the park.“When I think about it seriously,I am shocked,”she says,“but that doesn’t put me off.It drives me forward.” 1.Rigby hasn’t told her mum that she is one of the final 100 candidates because .  A.she wants to surprise her mum B.her mum doesn’t care about her C.she may give up the chance for her mum D.her mum doesn’t want her to take the risk 答案:D 解析:推理判断题。由第三段中的“it’s going to be difficult for my mum.”及“her mum told her she didn’t want her to go.” 2.What can we infer about Rigby? A.She is not afraid of the trip to Mars at all. B.She always tries to make her mum happy. C.She feels a strong sense of social responsibility. D.She wants to achieve fame through the trip to Mars. 由第四段中的“I am doing this for something better, which will hopefully benefit more people than...”及“it’s important what you do before you candidates because of .  A.her work experience B.her passion for space C.her boyfriend’s support D.her academic background 答案:A 解析:推理判断题。由最后一段开头的“Weedon thinks it was her teamworking skills that saw her through this far—in her current job she works as part of a group of four, the same size as the planned Mars One crew.”可推断,Weedon认为自己之所以能成为最后的100名候选人之一主要归功于她的小组工作经历。 Ⅱ.完形填空 (2014·合肥第一次质检) All of
