1. voluntary志愿的，自愿的
The police asked for his voluntary appearance.
警察要求他自动露面。
拓展：volunteer
(1) "志愿者”．后接介词for
Are there any volunteers for the event? 有主动做这件事情的人吗？
(2)常用volunteer sth. /to do sth. /for sth.自动提供;自动贡献；自愿效劳。
He volunteered some information.
他自动提供一些消息。
He volunteered to get some information.
他自愿去获取某些资料。
He volunteered for the campaign.
他自愿参加这次战役。

2. acknowledge
（1）“承认，供认”；常用 acknowledge sth./that; acknowledge sb. /sth. as; acknowledge having done.
He refused to acknowledge defeat/that he was defeated.
他拒绝承认失败／被打败。
She is acknowledged as an expert on the subject.
她被公认为这个学科的专家。
He acknowledged having made a mistake.
他承认犯I错误。
（2）表示感谢．为致谢
We must not fail to acknowledge his services to the town.
我们必须感谢他对本市的贡献。

3. elder
(1) old的比较级, 用于名词前,不与连用，指“（两个兄弟、姐妹之中）年龄较大的，年长的”。
Jane is Mary's elder sister. （一般不用 older）简是玛丽的姐姐。
Jane is older than Mary. （此处不用 elder）简比玛丽大。
(2)（尤指两人中）年纪大的人，长者，长辈
He is my elder by several years.
他比我大几岁。
Should we always follow the advice of our elders?
我们永远听长辈的劝告吗？

4. beneficial有益的，有用的
Fresh air and good food are beneficial to health.
新鲜空气和优良的食物有益于健康。
拓展：benefit
（1）利益，好处，恩惠
a benefit concert慈善音乐会
常用短语：be of benefit to对……有益
for the benefit of为了……的利益
That experience was of great benefit to me．
那段经历对我很有益。
（2）有益于
The sea sir will benefit you.
海上的空气将对你有益。
(3)得益于
We benefit from/by daily exercises.
= Daily exercise benefits us.
每天做操对我们有益。

5. eager热切的；渴望的
常用短语:be eager to do/for sth. 渴望做某事／某物
be eager for sth．to do渴望某人做某事
be eager（that）热切地希望
He was eager for success/to succeed.
他渴望成功/取得成功。
Tom was eager for you to come to the party.
汤姆殷切期盼你来参加晚会。
The president is eager that the project (should) be started early.
总经理热切希望这项计划能早日着手进行。
对比： anxious忧虑的，焦急的；
eager强调“对成功的期望”或“进取的热情”，含有积极向上的意思；
anxious强调“担心”或“焦急”，对结果感到不安。
I am eager to do that interesting job.
我急于做那件有趣的工作。
I am anxious to know the news from the battle field.
我急于想知道战场传来的消息。

6.starve
(1)挨饿；饿死
The proud man said he would starve rather than beg for food.
那个骄傲的人说他宁愿饿死也不愿讨饭。
(2) starve for sth. /to do 渴望；急需要
She is starving for attention.
她渴望被人注意。
I have been starving to see you.
我一直很想和你见面。
常用短语：starve to death starvation饿死

7. possess拥有
possess nothing
一无所有
拓展：（1）possessor= owner持有者；拥有人
