No one should listen to the negativity of others. If someone says you can’t, then prove them wrong. When I first started I couldn’t do a single proper pushup and I was out of breath after walking up the basement stairs. Instead of giving up and saying it was hopeless, I decided to struggle against what the doctors had to say about my future. It wasn’t fun at first. In fact, it was extreme suffering. The first 2-3 years were spent just getting myself to the point where most healthy young men would merely start from. It was only after years of hard work and patience that I began gaining a considerable amount of muscle and strength. When I finally got to the point of feeling good about myself and my body for the first time in my life, my body decided to give me the finger once again. I developed severe ulcerative colitis (溃疡性结肠炎) and lost it all. The child who once was extremely overweight was now the man who looked like a cancer survivor. I went from 210 pounds fairly fit to 160 pounds of skin and bone within 2-3 months. Once again, I worked my way back up to where I once was and run more and more for greater distances and longer periods. Now t at 205 pounds and nearing middle aged, I am the fittest I have ever been in my life. I am not sharing this story in order to talk big. I am only hoping that my story will encourage someone who is struggling like I was to step up and take their life and their health into their hands. Never give up! If I can do it, then anyone can. 1、What did the author decide to do according to paragraph 1? A.Be a professional athlete. B.Follow the doctors’ advice. C.Set the doctors’ advice aside. C.To inspire others to meet challenges bravely. D.To introduce a new way of improving health. 22.(8分)In Florida, one McDonald’s customer stared a pay-it-forward chain that inspired other 249 customers to be generous and do the same. To try to get his peers(同 龄 人 ) to do the same, the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco-bank, the Bartselana Student Bank, which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment. Set up in 2012, the bank is the world’s first bank for kids. To become a member, a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste and set a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank “partners” are required to deposit at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops. The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, who, thanks to Jose’s efforts, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by the bank members. The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw the money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger target. “At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project,” Jose recalls, “They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class.” The boy’s efforts paid off, and by 2013, the bank had over 200 members, who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, boasts ten educational centers. They are designed to teach the over 3,000 students, aged 10 to 18 , to become financially independent, use their money wisely, and help the environment. Not surprisingly, Jose’s efforts have earned him several national and international awards. On November 20, 2018, Jose won Children’s Climate Prize, which comes with a medal and $5,500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment. 1、Why did Jose set up the bank? While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of. A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 12 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour. Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run. 1、Crossing legs when sitting may cause the following except______. A.blood pressure increase B.neck and back pain C.temporary nerve damage D.numbness in the legs 2、Which of the following is true? A.All people are used to sitting with legs crossed without their own notice. B.Researchers are unaware of health problems caused by the common sitting habit. C.It is crucial but impossible to get into the habit of sitting with feet planted flat. D.Crossing legs increases resistance of blood circulation throughout the body. 3、After reading this passage, what will people be more likely to do? A.Maintain a healthy sitting posture B.Find a comfortable way to sit C.Move the neck to ease discomfort D.Do exercises to lower blood pressure 25.(10分) A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products. A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are
