The captain English Brilliant Invention Turns Office Paper Waste into Pencils If you often find yourself searching for a pencil, then this clever little device called the P&P Office Waste Processor will keep well stocked by quickly producing them from simple office waste paper. The device gobbles up your paper waste basket contents and spits fully formed pencils out at the press of a button. Learn more after the jump! The designers make the clever connection between an office’s waste stream and supply needs with a satisfying design that produces something truly useful — if not perfunctorily named. The literature says you simply feed a sheet of paper into the top and the device will wrap it tightly around a graphite stick, adding a bit of glue to keep the paper together. Once ready, the freshly minted pencil pops out the side. There are plenty of paper-based pencils on the market, so it seems the product is viable, but since the user needs to supply glue and graphite sticks there is some fiddling. A transparent cover allows you to see the operation which can be set for automated or manual (although they do not explain what that exactly means). The P&P will even pre-sharpen the pencil before spitting it out. The same hole is also an automatic pencil sharpener. The award winning device by Chinese designers Cheng Zhu Ruan, Yuan Yuan Liu, Xin wei Yuan and Chao Chen looks promising, but as of yet, it’s not in production. If this high tech device really does what it claims, it could be quite popular in schools or some offices where folks still use the low tech pencil. Only time will tell if the design makes it to the local office supply store, but we are crossing our fingers. Author Stephen Levine asks the question, "If you had an hour to live and could make only one phone call - who would you call, what would you say, and why are you waiting?" What a powerful message! Who knows what we are waiting for? Perhaps we want to believe we will live forever, or that "someday" we will get around to telling the people we love how much we love them. Whatever the reasons, most of us simply wait too long. As fate would have it, I'm writing this strategy on my grandmother's birthday. Later today, my father and I are driving out to visit her grave site. She died about two years ago. Before she passed away, it became obvious how important it was to her to let her family know how much she loved us all. It was a good reminder that there is no good reason to wait. Now is the time to let people know how much you care. Ideally, you can tell someone in person or over the phone. I wonder how many people have been on the receiving end of a phone call where the caller says, "I just called to tell you how much I love you!" You may be surprised that almost nothing in the world means so much to a person. How would you like to receive the same message? If you're too shy to make such a phone call, write a heartfelt letter instead. Either way, you may find that as you get used to it, letting people know how much you love them will become a regular part of your life. It probably won't shock you to know that, if it does, you'll probably begin receiving more love as a result. The eye of the storm is that one specific spot in the center of a twister, hurricane, or tornado that is calm, almost isolated from the frenzy of activity. Everything around the center is violent and turbulent, but the center remains peaceful. How nice it would be if we too could be calm and serene in the midst of chaos - in the eye of the storm. Surprisingly enough, it's much easier that you might imagine to be in the eye of a "human storm." What it takes is intention and practice. Suppose, for example, that you are going to a family gathering that is going to be chaotic. You can tell yourself that you are going to use the experience as an opportunity to remain calm. You can commit to being the one person in the room who is going to be an example of peace. You can practice breathing. You can practice listening. You can let others be right and enjoy the glory. The point is, you can do it if you set your mind to it. By starting out with harmless scenarios like family gatherings, cocktail parties, and birthday parties for children, you can build a track record and enjoy some success. You'll notice that by being in the eye of the storm, you will be more present-moment oriented. You'll enjoy yourself more than ever before. Once you have mastered harmless circumstances like these, you can practice on more difficult areas of life - dealing with conflict, hardship, or grief. If you start slowly, have some success, and keep practicing, pretty soon you'll know how to live in the eye of the storm. Changing the DNA You Were Born With Changing the DNA You Were Born With We’ve all heard this before – you can’t change the genes you were born with…or can you? Impossible as it may sound many researchers have been trying to do just that. The field is called gene therapy and it involves “correcting” your existing genes to prevent or treat illness. Think of it as cutting-and-pasting new instructions into your body’s existing user manual. So, how do researchers go about altering what your parents gave you? They first have to determine which gene(s) need to be changed. One ambitious attempt currently involves lessening the effects of infections such as HIV. In this case, the virus enters some of your healthy blood cells through specific receptors. These receptors are essentially designated guest entrances, just for the HIV virus. The obvious solution? Get rid of these entryways so the virus can’t get into your healthy cells. Again, the key is to remove the cell’s instructions on how to make these entryways. In clinical trials, scientists are using DNA-cutting scissors, to delete these instructions. No more instructions, no more entryway for HIV viruses. If the virus can’t get in, your cells can’t get sick. Kid's Corner brings parental controls to Windows Phone 8 Adults love shiny things, and kids are no different. If you’re a parent and you own a smart phone or tablet, it’s inevitable that your young ones will want to monkey with it. Fortunately for all of us with children, Microsoft has built a new parental control feature into Windows Phone 8 called Kid’s Corner that will prevent any harm from coming to our devices while the kids play Cut the Rope or watch videos. And with all those candy-colored Nokia WP8 phones on the way, Kid’s Corner is arriving just in time. A little set-up is required first, of course. Pop in to the Kid’s Corner settings screen and choose the kind of content you want to be accessible. You can open up your music, movies, apps, and games, and it looks as though you’ll even be able to specify which ones you want the kids to be able to fire up — rather than only being able to give them carte blanche. Calling up Kid’s Corner is as simple as swiping in from the left whenever the WP8 locks creen is displayed, and exiting only requires a single tap of the power button. It may not be an earth-shattering addition, but it’s definitely the kind of feature that parents who are making the jump from a feature phone to their first smart phone could be swayed by. It’s also sure to be a hit with anyone who doesn’t want kids — or nosy friends — flicking through text messages, emails, or other personal information when a phone is left unattended for a few minutes. The Price of Success One Sunday afternoon a young man came across a wise sage. The young man asked the sage if he could show him the path to success. The sage said, if you really want to know the path, meet me at the river tomorrow morning. On the next day, the young man arrived early to the river, excited about what he was going to learn. The sage and the young man then got into a boat and went down the river. After a few minutes, the young man said, I’m ready to learn; teach me the way of success. The sage said, I will teach you, and he pushed the young man out of the boat and into the river. The sage then jumped into the river and pushed the young man’s head under the water. The young man fought and fought, but the sage kept the young man’s head under. Finally, the young man broke free and came to the top of the water. He asked the sage, what are you trying to do, kill me; I just wanted to know the way of success. The sage said, when you fight for success, like you were just fighting for your life, you will find it. The point I’m trying to make is this, if success is not critical to you, you won’t find it. You have to fight for it with everything that you have, because it won’t come easy. You must have a white hot burning desire in order to achieve the unachievable. There’s a quote that says, “The nose of the bulldog has been slanted backwards so that he may breathe without letting go.” To succeed you have to be like that Bulldog. You have to have a “no-give-up” mentality; you have to fight for you want, like everything is depending on it. 12
