The team of eight doctors reached the 8,850-meter summit via the South Col route but carried out their experiment about 400 meters lower because of severe weather at the top. After finding an area that provided some shelter, four of the team members removed their gloves, unzipped their down suits and had blood drawn from the femoral artery (股动脉). An analysis (分析) showed what doctors had long suspected—that high-altitude climbers have unbelievably low levels of oxygen in their blood, normally seen only in patients close to death. The readings were also the lowest-ever recorded in humans, as low as 2.55 kilopascals (千帕斯卡). This compares to a normal level of 12-14 kilopascals for healthy people and a level of eight kilopascals for critically ill patients, Grocott added. “We did an extensive search and couldn’t find any measurements in humans that were lower and not many that were even close,” he said. Grocott and colleagues, who published their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine, believe a build-up of fluid (流体) in the lungs due to the high altitude might have contributed to the low oxygen levels. While further research is needed, the results suggest that some critically ill patients may be able to tolerate lower oxygen levels before receiving oxygen or other interventions (干预) that run the risk of side effects, Grocott said. “What is interesting about this is there may be some patients who can tolerate lower levels and get less harm from these other interventions,” Grocott said. 1. The lowest levels of blood oxygen in humans was discovered by _________. A. doing experiments in a lab B. conducting study outside C. publishing the findings in a magazine D. analyzing the findings 2. The underlined word means _________. A. a patient with the lowest levels of blood oxygen B. a well-known thing C. an unexpected thing D. a kind of effect 3. According to the passage, we can infer that _________. A. British doctors are sure to give a decisive answer in one year D. British doctors will go on with the study in the near future 4. Which of the following is true? A. Air has some effect on the state of body. B. Low oxygen level is the same to everybody. C. Measurements in humans have been found which are close to normal level. D. Nobody can stand lower levels of blood oxygen. 5. Why the team of eight doctors did their experiment about 400 meters lower has something to do with _____. A. levels of oxygen in blood B. height of an area C. weather condition D. state of health B Champs-Elysées advanced French Audio Magazine If you love France and the French language you’ll want to subscribe(订阅)to Champs-Elysées, the Audio Magazine for intermediate-to-advanced (中高等) speakers of French.
