Working at home using computers or telephones is better than working in the office. The global world of work has seen radical changes in recent years, among which telecommuting, or working from home, stands out as the most remarkable brainchild of this technological age. An increasing number of people choose to complete their work from home and communicate with their offices using computers or telephones. While this may seem like a better option for workers and their employers, there are a number of drawbacks lurking behind the benefits of this development. A major disadvantage is that telecommuting blurs the line between your leisure time and your work. For most people who work in the office, they have fixed office hours, for example from 9am until 5pm. Anytime outside of that period, except for some rare occasions when they have to work overtime, is considered free time or family time. However, when people start to work from home, they may feel unable to escape their work or separate their life at home from their work. They may start to check their work email first thing in the morning, or they may work late into the night. And because getting to work is so easy without having to commute to the office, they may actually be working longer hours than their office counterparts. Another disadvantage is that the quality of work may suffer because of the reduced face-to-face interaction with other employees or supervisors. An important element in the successful operation of a company is effective communication between co-workers. This communication is not simply making a few telephone calls or sending a few emails. It involves face-to-face discussions, brainstorming, persuasion or even arguments where innovative ideas and strategic decisions are created. This kind of work atmosphere can never be created in a home environment no matter how sophisticated the technology is. Finally, once people start working away from the office, there is a decreased sense of working for an institution but instead an increased sense of working for a task or a product. Therefore, workers may feel less loyal to a company and more inclined to change jobs or work part-time or on contract, as long as it can provide reasonable pay and a flexible work schedule. Working in the office, on the other hand, often gives people a sense of belonging, a feeling that they are part of a larger group. Apart from the disadvantages already mentioned, there are also drawbacks including loneliness, isolation, the initial high cost of setting up, domestic distractions and interruptions etc. Therefore, this modern, seemingly attractive mode of working is actually not as efficient and rewarding as working in the office. Do you agree that the government should support the scientific research even there’s no practical use? 基础研究是一切发明的前提。 有些研究在开始看上去似乎没用,但是后来证明是有用的 政府应该合理分配预算 Should government support scientific research that does not have any practical use? Some people argue that government should pay more attention on those useful researches to deal with real problems. However, as far as I am concerned, we have benefited from many scientific researches that seem to have nothing practical use. First and foremost, basic research which always seems to have no practical use is important for science development. Most of practical science is based on theories. If scientists study nothing about theories, no inventions will be made. For example, Thomas Edison invented electric bulb which enlighten the dark world. He couldn’t make the big breakthrough without discoveries found by numerous scientists before him. Just like building a mansion, the height of the mansion depends on how deep the foundation is. Although basic researches are mostly useless for practice, they are the foundation of science. In addition, some scientific researches seem to be useless at the beginning while they turn out to be useful in the end. Even scientists couldn’t tell if some researches have practical use. For instance, gunpowder was invented for fireworks and crackers. Nobody knew that it was used in wars later on and killed numerous human beings’ lives. We don’t know neither that space station can breed some transgenic vegetables which may cure some diseases when we began to send rockets to the space. To the contrary, some kinds of researches that are claimed to be useful turn out to be useless. We couldn’t determine which one has practical use and which one doesn’t before we do research. Last but not least, governments should balance the money they have. That the government should support useless scientific research doesn’t mean that the government should pay endless money on it. After all, those researches which can solve real problems are more emergency and crucial to many people. We can see the yield in the close future. Basic research, on the other hand, needs longer time and more energy to show the value. To sum up, useless scientific research should be support by government in the long term. At the same time, government should balance the budget depending on the practical situation. 1 Do you agree with the following statement? In a team, those who do not accept others’ criticism can not succeed. There is no way one can avoid criticism from other people. Criticism is very natural as most people can see the world only from their point of view. Hence they are unable to see the holistic picture of the world and the need for diversity. If a person does not know how to handle criticism from other members of a team, he/she may tend to react negatively towards them, and his/her work performance is not likely to be successful. While working in a team, you can not be sure that your opinions, decisions or approaches are always correct, and in many cases you will need to accept criticism from other members who will point out your mistakes and direct you towards the right course of action. In sports, for example, especially in team sports such as football or basketball, any one player, no matter how skillful or experienced this player is, will make mistakes during a game, sometimes even “deadly ones”. And when criticisms pour in after the game, from team members, the coach, or team fans, the best strategy is not to run away or find excuses to avoid these criticisms, but to listen to and accept their criticisms, take their advice, and try hard to improve the next time. Other times, you may occasionally be misinterpreted, misjudged, and therefore unfairly criticized, but in a friendly work environment, these criticisms are often made out of good will. So in these cases it may be helpful that you listen carefully to what others say and try to understand their points of view, instead of reacting aggressively towards them, which may harm team relationship in the long run. I think we all have seen, in real life or on a TV program, a situation where two people started yelling at each other only because one thinks the other is intentionally finding fault. But often this is due to a simple misunderstanding or miscommunication. A successful team player would first of all stay calm, summarize the other person’s perspective, then find out the root of such misunderstanding, and finally resolve the conflict. Criticism, especially if it seems unjustified, can be painful and cause a defensive reaction, but a truly successful team player will face criticism with patience and professionalism, and turn it into a constructive force towards final success.(387) 版本2 Do you agree with the following statement? People holding different views cannot achieve success as a team.. Teamwork has become an important part of the working culture. Most companies now realize the importance of teamwork because in our modern world many tasks are becoming increasingly complex that they require a team with multiple skills to complete. But is it true that every member in the team should have the same opinion in order to achieve success? From my point of view, most of the time, a team consisting of divergent opinions are more likely to succeed. As we all know, it is not practical to expect everyone in a team to have the same point of view, because everyone is a different individual who has his or her own personality and ideas due to different backgrounds. However, often such differences in opinions can be resolved after sufficient discussion and especially after coordination by a team leader. I once joined a football team back in high school. Every time before a football match, team members would sit together and discuss strategies in order to defeat our opponent in the next game. Often in such discussion many different voices can be heard: Some members advocate offense but others emphasize defense. The team leader, the captain of our team, who is a very experienced football player, often played a very important role. He would make the final decision on team deployment, and his strategy always balanced offense with defense. Under his leadership, our team had won four championships in the school football league. Furthermore, even if different opinions cannot be resolved, it does not mean a team will fail, because sometimes difference in opinions will lead to some bright thoughts and creative ideas. In a company, for example, the majority of team members, because of company tradition or routine, are often confined to a stereotyped view and they would tend to agree with each other passively. But the best ideas often come after heated discussion among team members, who hold different or even conflicting views. So they need someone different, someone who can say no to the old practice, to generate innovative ideas and achieve important breakthroughs. In a word, having the same opinion or attitude to the issue is not a guarantee of successful team work. Indeed, we can learn a lot from the different views, as long as the team has a definite aim and is led by an experienced team leader.(394) Some people argue that one should choose more practical dream rather than challenging one because it is safer. However, as far as I am concerned, challenging dream can bring us more opportunities and help us to achieve success. First and foremost, people can be inspired by challenging plans. As the old saying goes, one’s potential is endless. Nothing is impossible if we try our best. For example, Bill Gates, one of the most successful persons in the world, quit from famous university and chose a more satisfying career—to start an enterprise. Most people would think he must be crazy. Nevertheless, Gates has created the Microsoft Empire because he knew that there would be a huge market for personal computer decades ago. If he continued his study which seemed to be more practical at that time, he would hardly achieve such success. In addition, when facing challenging plans, people always work harder. I believe challenge and pressure can bring out the best in people. For example, my father was born in a small village. He learned construction from my grandfather and wanted to be a building worker in the village just like my grandfather. After he went to Wuan, a big city near his village, he was attracted by the prospect of the city and so he decided to go to Wu an. He made up his mind to become a doctor in that city. After five years hard working and struggle, he opened a private hospital in Wuan finally. If he
