Oscar Wilde’s Aesthetics and Its Reflection in The Picture of Dorian Gary
【Abstract】Oscar Wilde, as the most important and most controversial figure in l9th century, best illustrates Aestheticism. He is the transitional writer who bridges the gap between Romanticism and Modernism, for he embodies qualities of both, such as Idealism and Experimentalism. There is no denying that Oscar is best remembered by his theories and influence of Aestheticism, which makes my study on his acceptance of Aestheticism significant. By analyzing Wilde’s most important literary work----The Picture of Dorian Gray, the thesis will explore his doctrines of Aesthetics and its reflection on his work from different perspectives.

【摘要】奥斯卡·王尔德作为英国唯美主义最具有代表性、最具有争议的作家填补了从浪漫主义到现实主义的空白。他身上既有浪漫主义的感性至上、唯美至上的特质，又具备了现代主义的意识。而唯美主义则是王尔德艺术创作生涯中的关键词，因此对于王尔德美学倾向的研究就更具有意义和价值。通过分析王尔德最具代表性的作品——《道林·格雷的画像》，本文将主要从不同视角来研究王尔德的美学观点以及这些观点在该作品中的体现。

1. Conclusion
Oscar Wilde, an Irish-born play writer, novelist, essayist and poet, associated with the 19th-century “art for art’s sake” movement, was undoubtedly known for his literary theories and doctrines and their execution in his works.
By analyzing his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, we find that Dorian is the embodiment of all the aesthetics view of Oscar Wilde, meanwhile Wilde condemns his character and punishes him to death. From the other two main characters, Lord Henry and Basil Hallward, we can trace out their ethical as well as aesthetic outlooks. Basil Hallward is a moralistic guide to Dorian. His generosity and humanity is the reflection of his humanizing ethical view. And besides, his non-profitable pursuit of art, in some level, reflects Wilde inner ideas of art. As a gospel of aestheticism, Lord Henry holds the aesthetic ethical view. His attitude towards life is detachment and his belief of happiness is the peace of mind.
Further studies about the paradoxical relationship between aesthetics and ethics can be done according to my argument. And I am deeply convinced that it is this paradoxical view that makes Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray profound and provoking.
