The Laughing Kookaburra is one of the commonest and best known of all Australia's birds.The raven-sized male and female Laughing Kookaburra look very much alike，but close observation shows two distinct differences。First，the male bears a bright blue rump patch，in contrast to the female's brown one．Secondly，the patch over the eye is white on the male and buff-coloured. on the hen．Young kookaburras appear to be similar to their mothers．
Without a doubt the most distinctive thing about the Laughing Kookaburra is his laugh. Most often the laugh is uttered in a sunrise or sunset serenade. Usually, it is a danger or territory defence call. The laugh may be uttered by a bird sitting alone and may or may note answered by another lone bird．The laugh may become a chorus of two lone birds．At other times，one to four birds may utter the sound singly or in chorus in the same tree or side by side on the same limb．
The call itself almost suggests insanity in sound．It consists of two parts-though not always ．It begins with a rattle，gurgle orchuckle through a closed beak．Then the call changes into a laugh．With the mouth open and the beak pointed skyward，a long series of "Ha Ha Ha Huh，Ho Ha Huhs" comes forth in an almost deafening sound．At the conclusion of most calls are long，drawn-out rasping gurgles．

1. 笑鸟是澳大利亚鸟类中最常见、最有名的一种. 笑鸟和渡鸦一样大，雄的和雌的长得很相像。但是仔细观察，就会发现两个明显的区别。首先，在靠近尾巴的地方，雄鸟披着天蓝色的羽毛，与雌鸟的棕色羽毛截然不同。其次，眼睛上边，雄鸟是一片白，雌鸟却是浅黄色。幼鸟的相貌，看来随母亲。
笑鸟最突出的特点当然是它的笑声。它多在早晚发笑，像是在唱黎明曲或黄昏歌。这笑声通常是一种信号，表示危险将要到来，或者需要奋起保卫自己的领地。有时一只孤鸟发出笑声，另一只孤鸟也许响应，也许不响应。这笑声也许是两只孤鸟的合唱曲。有时一两只或三四只笑鸟同栖一棵树上，或并列在一根树枝上，它们也许各自发出笑声，也许来一段大合唱。。
笑鸟的叫声听起来似乎是一种疯狂的声音。这叫声包括两部分，但也并不总是如此。开始的时候，闭着嘴，发出 咯咯或吭吭或咕噜咭噜的声音。接着叫声变为笑声。这时，张口仰天，反复发出“哈哈哈呼，多哈呼”的声音，简直能把人的耳朵震聋。在笑声结束的时候，往往还要拖上一阵沙哑的咯咯声。
