After he died, some people in his hometown put up a statue of him on the horse. There was a school near the statue, and some of the boys passed the statue every day. The boys said, “Good morning, Parshing” when they saw him. One Saturday, one of the youngest boys was going to do some shopping with his parents. When he passed the statue, he said good morning but he stopped and asked his parents, “I like Parshing very much, but who is that man on his back?” 【Too fat】 A man made a nice talk machine. It could weigh people’s weight. The man wanted to try the machine before he could make a lot of them. He put the machine into the waiting room of a station. There were a lot of people in and out. The first one who used the machine was an Indian woman. She stood on the machine. The machine thought for a few seconds to decide which language to speak. “Good morning, madam,” it said in Indian. “Your weight is 72 kilos. That’s three kilos more. If you eat more fruit and vegetables, you’ll be soon all right. Please have a nice day.” The second one to use the machine was a Chinese girl. She stood on the machine and waited to hear her weight. “Good morning, Miss,” the machine said in Chinese. Your weight is 45 kilos. It’s all right for your age and height. Go on to eat what you eat every day. Please have a nice day.” The third one to use the machine was a very fat American woman. She thought for a long time to stand on it. The machine spoke loudly in English, “Good morning! Will one of you get off?” What’s this in English? 【The duck’s friend】 An American tourist was having lunch in a restaurant in China whose special food was duck. The waiter explained each dish as he brought it to the table: “This is the breast of the duck. This is the leg of the duck. This is the wing of the duck.” Then came a dish that the American knew was chicken. He waited for the waiter. And few men could trouble him. But one day he was knocked down by a car and his head got badly hurt. And now he often forgets something and thinks in different ways from ours. One morning, Mr. Green woke up early. He put on his coat and began to walk in the street while people were sleeping. He wanted to read newspapers but the post office was closed. He had to go back and go to bed again. As soon as he took off his clothes, the door was knocked at. He got up and opened it. Two hunters came in. They looked at him carefully and then said, “We saw a dead man just now. We thought it was you.” “Really? Where?” Mr. Green said in surprise. “In the forest.” “It’s impossible!” he said, “I didn’t go there at all this morning.” “But he died last night.” “I haven’t been there for nearly a week.” “But he looks like you!” “What clothes does he wear, then?” “A blue coat like yours and brown trousers.” “And what color are his socks?” “Black.” Mr. Green became happy. He showed his socks to them and said, “Look! Mine are white.” My name’s Gina. 【Einstein and his daughter】 One morning, Albert Einstein was riding in a bus to go to work. He was thinking about some math problem when suddenly the bus stopped and his glasses fell off. Fortunately they were not broken. A girl sitting next to him immediately picked them up and handed them to the great scientist. Einstein took the glasses and he was very thankful. “It’s very kind of you,” he said gently. “What’s your name, please?” “Cindy Einstein, Dad,” said the girl, smiling. 【Mr. Watt and Mr. Knott】 Mr. Knott worked in a big school in London. His home was far from the school. So he was usually very tired when he got home. One evening he went to bed very early. But after a little while, the telephone rang. So he got out of his bed, picked up the telephone. “Hello. Who’s that speaking, please?” he said. “Watt,” a man answered. “What’s your name, please?” said Mr. Knott. “Watt’s my name,” was the answer. “Yes, I asked you that. What’s your name?” Mr. Knott said again. “I told you ‘Watt’s my name’,” said the other man. “Are you Jack Smith?” “No, I’m Knott,” answered Mr. Knott. “Will you give me your name, please?” said Mr. Watt. “Will Knott,” answered Mr. Knott. Then both Mr. Watt and Mr. Knott put their phone down angrily and thought, “That is a rude, foolish man!” ★a rude man 粗人 This is my sister. 【He needs glasses.】 Patient: Doctor, I think I need glasses. Teller: You certainly do! This is a bank. 【Where’s the hotel?】 Pat Hogan was traveling around the country in the car. One evening he was driving along a road and looking for a small hotel when he saw an old man at the side of the road. He stopped his car and said to the old man, “I want to go to the Sun Hotel. Do you know it?” “Yes,” the old man answered. “I’ll show you the way.” He got into Pat’s car, and they drove for about twelve miles. When they came to a small house, the old man said, “Stop here.” Pat stopped and looked at the house. “But this isn’t a hotel,” he said to the old man. “No,” the old man answered, “this is my house. And now I’ll show you the way to the Sun Hotel. Turn around and go back nine miles. Then you’ll see the Sun Hotel on the left.” Is this your pencil? 【Whose ball?】 As two boys were playinging near a house, a woman leaned out of the window and showed them a ball. “Is this yours?” she asked. “Did it break anything in your house, madam?” said one of the boys. “No,” replied the lady. “Then it's mine.” 【We’d better find a good doctor!】 When Mr. Scott was a 25-year-old young man, he began to work in the hospital and he has been there for 32 years. Nearly all the people in the town know the old man. He is always kind to the young patients and often plays games with them. The children are not afraid of him and they think he is a good doctor. One afternoon Mr Clarke was very busy. A lot of children had a cold and there were many young patients in the waiting room. He looked them over one after another carefully and he had no time to have a rest. Finally at two past six he finished his work and was leaving his office. Just then a woman with a small boy in her arms came in hurriedly. The doctor didn’t know her but he still sat down to look over the boy carefully. It seemed that the boy came to the hospital for the first time and looked quite nervous. Seeing this, Mr. Scott pointed to the boy’s ear, and asked him with a smile, “Is this your nose, my little friend?” The boy turned to his mother at once, and almost cried and said loudly, “I think we’d better find a good doctor!” Where’s my school bag? 【Father’s nose】 Tom: Mum, where’s red ink? Mum: What do you want it for? Tom: I’m drawing a picture of Daddy. Now it’s time to draw his nose. 【Where’s his ear?】 Bill is a lazy boy. He doesn’t often use his head and doesn’t listen to his teacher in class, so he can’t do his homework. His teachers don’t like him. They tell his parents about it, but they don’t know what to do. It’s Sunday today. Bill gets up early in the morning. After breakfast his mother tells him to do his homework. He goes to his bedroom. At nine the boy wants to go to bed, his father asks him, “Do you finish your homework?” “No”, answers the boy. “I can’t do it.” His father is angry. He pulls him by the ear and says, “Where is your ear?” “Oh, dear!” Bill calls out. “It’s in your hand.” 【Where’s the car?】 One night there was a heavy snowstorm, and in the morning Mr. Smith’s garden was full of deep snow. Mr. Smith wanted to take his car out, so he paid a man to clean the path from his garage to his gate. He said to this man, “Don’t throw any snow on that side because it will kill the bushes in my garden. Don’t throw any on the other side because it will damage the wall. And don’t throw any snow on to the street, or the police officer will be angry with you.” Then Mr. Smith went out for breakfast. After breakfast, he came back. The path was clean. Mr. Smith was very happy and wanted to give the man some more money until he opened the garage to get his car out! The garage was filled with snow from the path.
