If you have the wish and really make a conscious (有意识的) effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you. Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remembered locking it carefully the night before. Memory “tricks” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barbershop( 理发店) waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barbershop across the street from my office. We always seem to find something funny and interesting in incidents(事件) caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “tricks” of our memory can cause us great trouble. 21. If you want to have a good memory, _____. A. you should ask someone else to help you to remember things B. you should make a conscious effort to practice and exercise C. you should never stop learning D. you should try hard to remember things 22. In the passage, the writer seems to tell us _____. A. forgetting things is serious and dangerous B. always forgetting things is understandable C. forgetting things at times is natural D. the ways to protect yourself from memory “tricks” 23. The best title for this passage is“_____”. A. Tricks of Memory B. How to Get a Good Memory C. The Danger of Forgetfulness and Absent-mindedness D. Get Rid of Absent-mindedness B Research by the Institute of Education (IOE) in London found that men who went to single-sex schools were not only more likely to be separated from a partner or divorced, but also more likely to be depressed by middle age. The chances of women having successful marriages were not affected by whether they were educated in mixed or single-sex schools. Separate research by the IOE found that going without boys was beneficial for women in other ways since there was a “statistically significant positive association between single-sex schooling and wages for women". The study into marital success interviewed 17,000 adults who were taught in a range of schools including private boarding schools to state comprehensives. It found that single-sex education does not compromise the chances either of men or women of getting married. However, researchers found that boys educated on their own were more likely to divorce in later life. While for women, there was no significant link. The research also found men taught in boys' schools were more likely to suffer from depression by age 42—perhaps because of their increased chances of marital breakdown. But Professor Leonard's team was unable to identify why those men educated in a single-sex environment were more likely to divorce. The study asked married and cohabiting couples where men had attended both single-sex and mixed schools to rate how happy they were and found no marked difference in their happiness levels or willingness to share domestic chores. Mary Boust, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said the IOE research confirmed what was always suspected." All the research shows single-sex schools are good for girls but bad for boys—both in terms of academic performance and socialization," she said. Boys learn better when they are with girls and they actually learn to get on better." The findings were presented at a conference on gender in education hosted by Perse School for Girls in Cambridge. 24. The researches made by the IOE indicate that ____. A. school model has little influence on women's marriage B. education is the main cause of middle age depression C. boys in single-sex schools are more likely not to get married D. mixed schools arc relatively better than single-sex schools 25. According to the passage, the single-sex education ____. A .comprises a wide range of schools B. has a close link with women's marriage C .influences men's chances of getting married D. may increase the risk of divorce for men in later life 26. The underlined word "cohabiting" probably means ____. A. living together before getting married B. working together in a project C. having the same habit D. studying in the same school 27. According to the passage, Mary Boust suggests that ____. A. the IOE 's researches were suspected B. mixed school is a better choice for boys C. boys are better in academic performance than girls D. mixed schools are good to boys in terms of socialization only C From our small world we have looked at the cosmic(宇宙的) ocean for thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars. They called these objects planets, meaning wanderers, and named them after Roman deities---Jupiter, king of the gods; Venus, the god of love and beauty and Saturn, father of Jupiter and god of agriculture. The stargazers also observed comets with sparking tails, and shooting stars apparently falling from the sky. Science developed quickly during the European Renaissance. Fundamental physical laws governing planetary motion were discovered, and the orbits of the planets around the Sun were calculated. In the 17th century, astronomers pointed a new device called the telescope at the heavens and made surprising discoveries. But the years since 1959 have reached a golden age of solar system exploration. Advancements in rocketry after World War II enabled our machines to break the grip of Earth’ gravity and travel to the Moon and to other planets. The United States has sent automated(自动化的) spacecraft, then human-crewed expeditions, to explore the Moon. Our automated machines have orbited and landed on Venus and Mars, explored the Sun’s environment, observed comets and asteroids(小行星), and made close-range surveys while flying past Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These travelers brought a breakthrough in our knowledge and understanding of the solar system. Through the electronic sight and other “senses” of our automated spacecraft, color and complexion have been given to worlds that for centuries appeared to Earth-bound eyes as unclear points of light. And dozens of previously unknown objects have been discovered. Future historians will likely view these pioneering flights through the solar system as some of the most remarkable achievements of the 20th century. 28. What is the meaning of the Underlined word “deities” in the first paragraph? A. Beauties B. Ladies C. Gods D. Rulers 29. During the European Renaissance, scientists________. A. discovered comets with sparking tails. B. discovered physical laws of planetary movement. C. travelled to the Moon and other planets D. sent spacecraft to explore the Moon. 30. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. There will be a long way to go in the solar system exploration. B. The early solar system exploration will be thought highly of by future historians. C. The flights through the solar system started from the nineteenth century. D. Future historians will ignore the flights through the solar system. 31. The purpose of this passage is to_________. A. list our nation’s achievements on exploration B. show the development of spacecraft C. describe ancient astronomers’ exploration D. introduce human’s space exploration E Be Healthy! Be Slim!
