BEIJING一China's ruling Communist Party announced Thursday that the country will start allowing all couples to have two children，abolishing the policy that limited many urban couples to only one child for more than three decades.
A communiqué from the party's Central Committee said that the decision to allow all couples to have two children was "to improve the balanced development of population" and to deal with an aging population.
China，which has the world's largest population at 1.4 billion people，introduced the one-child policy in 1979 as a temporary measure to curb a then-surging population and limit the demands for water and other resources. Soon after it was implemented，rural couples were allowed two children if their firstborn was a girl. Ethnic minorities are also allowed more than one child.
Couples who have broken the rules were forced to pay a fee in proportion to their income. In some cases，rural families saw their livelihood in the form of their pigs and chickens taken away.
In November 2021，the party announced that it would allow couples to have two children if one of the parents is a single child，the first substantial easing of the policy in nearly three decades.
The government credits the one-child policy with preventing 400 million births and helping lift countless families out of poverty by easing the strain on the country's limited resources. But many demographers argue the birthrate would have fallen anyway as China's economy developed and education levels rose.
Moreover, the abrupt fall in the birthrate has pushed up the average age of the population and demographers foresee a looming crisis because the policy reduced the young labor pool that must support the large baby boom generation as it retires.

The man, believed to be named Josh Crabber .found a guest's wallet in a garbage can while looking for food. Instead of using the credit cards to his benefit, Crabber，who is thought to be homeless，went to several hotels in search of the wallet's owner, eventually returning it to the Omni Hotel. Some research in recent years is making the old saying "clothes make the man" look like an incomplete thought. Clothes, it appears, make the man see the world differently.
A new study looks especially at how formal clothes change people's thought processes. “Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful .and that changes the basic way we see the world,” says Abraham Butchick, an author of the study. Butchick and his co-authors found that wearing clothing that is more formal than usual makes people think more broadly，rather than narrowly. They say that wearing a suit encourages people to use abstract thought more readily than concrete thought.
Another similar study showed that when people wore a white coat that they believed belonged to a doctor, they paid more attention to what they were doing. This effect didn't hold when they believed the coat was a painter's. At work，however, when some people have to wear suit, there are some special consequences when clothing causes people to think in a more abstract way. “If you get a piece of had feedback at work，if you think about it with a concrete thinking style，it is more likely to affect your confidence negatively，” says Michael Slepian, another one of the paper's authors. Slepian added that thinking about money with an abstract thinking style might lead one to skip sudden purchases in favor of smarter, long-term saving behavior.
As casual clothes become common in a growing number of workplaces, it would seem that the symbolic power of the suit will he weakened in coming years. Slepian thinks the opposite. “You could even predict that the effect could get stronger if formal clothing is only kept for the most formal of situations，”he says. “It takes a long time for symbols and our explanation of those symbols to change，and I wouldn't expect the suit as a symbol of power to he leaving us anytime soon.”
