C2 故事类 【英语卷•2022届江苏省徐州市第一中学(徐州市)高三考前模拟(202205)】C2 D DAVID Beckham didn’t make it. Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t hit it so big either. But Gareth Bale, 24, has become the most expensive soccer player in the history of the game. Four years after the arrival of Ronaldo at a record cost of $125 million (765 million yuan) in 2009, Real Madrid is expected to pay $135 million for Bale. But how is it that Bale, who was playing left back and being benched (当替补) by his English Premier League team a couple of years ago, now attracts such a big deal? As of years ago, the Welshman had played 24 matches for Tottenham Hotspur, and had never finished on the winning side once – a record for any Premier League player. Tottenham even privately considered selling him. “A player who had once looked a prodigy (神童) – as a 17-year-old Southampton full back, the youngest ever international for Wales – already appeared, at 20, on the way down,” wrote Tim Adams at UK’s The Observer. Through all the humiliations (屈辱), Bale hung on. While he was injured and kept out of games, he worked hard to reinvent himself. Bale’s father Frank’s uncompromising (不妥协的) discipline had a great impact on his son. When he returned from injury later that season, Bale had been transformed in the gym. In a Champions League match in 2010, he established himself as the so-called “Incredi-Bale” overnight throughout Europe. With his team four goals behind to Inter Milan at halftime, Bale surprisingly scored a hat-trick before the game was over. Even former Manchester United coach, Alex Ferguson, praised him: “He had been a six-foot, gangly (瘦长的), slim boy; then all of a sudden he was built like a light heavyweight boxer.” With Bale’s help, Tottenham are flying high in the league. In the 2022-13 season, he won all three of the important individual awards: the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association) Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award. This has all led to people comparing him to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Ronaldo, who are widely regarded as the two best players in the world. Former Madrid star Zinedine Zidane has even decided to mentor (指导) Bale. “He’s perhaps not quite at the level of the other two, but he’s different,” Zidane told ESPN. “So personally I don’t think he’s far off.” 56. According to the text, which of the following is true? A. Gareth Bale played full back for Southampton at the age of 17. B. Tottenham Hotspur never considered selling Gareth Bale. C. Tottenham Hotspur beat Inter Milan in a Champions League match. D. Gareth Bale won all three of the important individual awards in life. 57. What plays the most critical role in Bale’s successful career? A. His natural talent for soccer. B. His father’s discipline and impact. C. His determination and hard work. D. His coaches’ effective guidance. 58. From the passage we can infer that Bale lost 24 matches for Tottenham Hotspur _________. A. before 17 years old B. between 17 and 20 years old C. after 20 years old D. at the age of 24 59. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage? A. World Famous Soccer Stars B. It killed me inside knowing that their marriage was over, and there was nothing that could be done to save it. I knew one had to go, and I knew who it would be. My mother started drinking when I was 2 years old. She would leave the house late at night and not return until the next morning. I knew my father was hurting inside, and I felt his pain too. He had to do something about that, because her problems were beginning to change our lives. I watched her walk out that night, not realizing what was happening to our family. It didn’t occur to me that I would not see her again for almost two years. That day changed my life in more ways than I can say. I had looked up to and counted on her --- and now she was gone. I believe she was perfect in every way, and hoped to be just like her. After a while, though, I began to see just who she really was. The court gave my father full custody(监护) of my brother and me; my mother had no visitation right. It was two years before she was allowed to see us. That first Saturday visit came and went --- she didn’t arrive. She had her chance and blew it, which hurt me more than anything. I fell into a serious depression. I sat in my room and did not sleep, eat, talk or do anything but cry for six months. Then she was given another chance to see us. This time she came, but she was completely drunk. She was violent and out of control; she refused to leave. My father had to call the police to remove her. After that visit, my mother decided to try to sort herself out. She began attending Alcoholics Anonymous(嗜酒者互戒会). It was difficult for her in the beginning, and she was in and out of the program constantly. Finally, she decided to give it her all; she went on with the program and became stronger every day for her and for us. My mother has been sober for 10 years. Even though my parents are no longer together, I feel very lucky and thankful that I have my mother in my life again. She is the same woman now that I used to know and love --- an amazing person. I have learned from her mistakes and that will help me in the future to be a better person. There is hope for everyone --- if you give it your all and believe in yourself, anything can happen. 21. From the writer’s reaction after the first Saturday visit, we can conclude that __________. A. she was disappointed in her mother’s method of dealing with drinking B. she had expected her mother to come and return to her old self C. she no longer expect her mother to change D. she had a clear idea of who her mother really was 22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A. The writer had her mother go home in the end. B. The writer’s mother could hardly win her respect again. C. The writer drew strength from the fact that her mother finally pulled through. D. After the second visit, the writer’s mother continued attending Alcoholics Anonymous all the time. 23. The underlined word “sober” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “__________”. A. not drunk B. not calm C. single D. healthy 24. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Drinking Drives Mother Away, Love Draws her Back B. The Reunion of a Ruined Family C. Believe in Your Family and Yourself D. Medical and Psychological Dangers of Drinking 21. 【学问点】推断推理题 【答案解析】B 依据第五段I believe she was perfect in every way, and hoped to be just like her。第七段She had her chance and blew it, which hurt me more than anything. I fell into a serious depression.可见,作者期望母亲能来看自己。选B。 22. 【学问点】细节题 【答案解析】C最终一段Even though my parents are no longer together, I feel very lucky and thankful that I have my mother in my life again.推断出A错;She is the same woman now that I used to know and love --- an amazing person.可知,母亲获得了孩子的敬重,排解B;第九段It was difficult for her in the beginning, and she was in and out of the program constantly.可知,母亲进出戒酒协会多次,并非始终在戒酒会。排解D;选C。 23. 【学问点】词义猜想题 【答案解析】A 依据Even though my parents are no longer together, I feel very lucky and thankful that I have my mother in my life again. 再结合上文,作者始终期望母亲能够戒酒,重新回归到正常的生活中。Sober在这里是不喝酒的意思,选A。 24. 【学问点】标题确定题 【答案解析】A全文只有最终一段时总结,依据love --- an amazing person. I have learned from her mistakes and that will help me in the future to be a better person. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. After a short hesitation, I shook my head and kept walking. With helplessness, he said, “I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But still, I kept on walking. The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. In fact, I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. On a freezing cold night, I wondered what would happen to a hungry man. Flying back to my hometown, Anchorage, I couldn’t help thinking of him. I tried to find excuses for my failure to help. After all, government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you’re not supposed to give money to beggars. But I just couldn’t forget the incident and began to think I must do something. At that time, I was writing a garden column(专栏) for the local Daily News. Suddenly, I came up with an idea. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens donated to Bean’s? Bean’s Cafe, the soup kitchen which has volunteered to feed hundreds of hungry people every day for many years. The idea began to take off. I began to receive more e-mails and calls from kind people. They tried their best to show their concerns about the hungry. Food was sent by different warm-hearted people and even those who only grew flowers sent their flowers. They are food for the spirit, which comforted me a lot. Next year, the Garden Writers Association of America held their annual conference in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage’s program, Plant a Row for Bean’s became Plant a Row for the Hungry. You can imagine how happy I was then. 21. According to the passage, the reason why the author refused to give some money to the beggar probably is that ________. A. he happened not to take money then B. he wasn’t fond of beggars C. he thought that the beggar was lying D. he didn’t like being bothered 22. Why did the author can’t help thinking of the beggar ? A. Because he felt he had done wrong for his failure to help him. B. Because he wanted to know whether the beggar had lied to him. C. Because he was worried that the beggar might die from hunger. D. Because some agencies, churches and charities should help the beggar. 23. What does the underlined phrase “take off” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. remove clothes. B. leave suddenly. C. become successful. D. come into being. 24. What’s the correct order to record the author’s launch of the program “Plant a Row for the Hungry?” ① He ran into a beggar. ② He was regretful. ③ He came up with the idea of planting a row for Bean’s. ④ The Plant a Row for Bean's became Plant a Row for the Hungry. ⑤ He went back home. ⑥ Writers gathered in Anchorage.
