In August of AD 79,Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air.Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later,Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes.Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries,Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then ,in the year 1861,an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii.Slowly, carefully,Ginseppe and his men dug.The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79.There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats.Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom,so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread too, metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today.Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny power tell us that women liked to wear eyemakeup. Ginseppe has died, but his work continues.Onefourth has not been uncovered yet.Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii. 1.Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year? A.To visit the volcano. B.To shop and eat there. C.To watch sports and plays. D.To see how Pompeiians lived. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years. 2.Why had so many people remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius? A.The city nearly offered all kinds of fun. B.The area produced the finest wine in Italy. C.Few people expected the volcano to erupt again. D.The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass. 从其次段后两句话Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not. 3.Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79? A.Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully. B.Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched. C.Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects. D.Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted. 4.What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2,000 years ago? A.They lived more or less the same as Italians now do. B.They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup. C.They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating. D.They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79. B Sydney-A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney on February 23.It was the third shark attack along the coast of Australia's largest city in a month. The 15yearold boy and his father were in the water off Avalon,on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months. “The father heard a scream and turned to see his son thrashing (激烈扭动)about in the water,”police said.“Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his father.” Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said,“It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.”He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the shore.“There was a lot of pain,as you can imagine.”The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries. Police said the bites“cut through to the bone”,but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures (骨折).He was in a stable condition now. Several beaches were closed after the attack.Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy.“I don't even know if he saw it,”Miller said. Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's worldfamous Bondi beach. Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to the shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White-the maneaters made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws-are protected in Australian waters. 5.The report mainly tells us________. A.attracted B.dragged C.bit D.packed 答案 C [由第四段的“He said the boy was bleeding heavily(流血严峻))when he was brought to shore.”可以看出,小男孩被鲨鱼咬了,所以要用bit(bite的过去式)。 7.What do we know about the city of Sydney from the passage? A.It is one of the largest cities in Australia. B.Sydney harbor is not far from the famous Opera House. C.There are many locals and tourists on its coast all the year round. D.There are few shark species in the waters off Sydney's beaches. 从第七段中的“in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House”可知答案。] 8.About the injury of the boy we know that________. A.he was losing much blood when he was dragged out B.he was very nervous when he was sent to hospital C.he may be in danger of losing his leg D.he was injured in the right leg 答案 A [细节理解题。 Dear friends, Here is my points. We students of today have to fix our attention on our lessons, and for a result,we know few of society.A holiday is the best time and the best chance to make up for that.Take a parttime job is a good form of social practice. That we have learned in books and in class can't have same important effect on us as what we have learned through personal practice. In social practice,we can surely make a progress in both knowledge and practical ability.Beside, taking a parttime job,we may got paid more or less to help our family. Thus,I will say a senior school student should take a parttime job in holiday,if possible,of course. 答案 Dear friends, Here my points. We students of today have to fix our attention on our lessons, and a result,we know of society.A holiday is the best time and the best chance to make up for that. a parttime job is a good form of social practice. we have learned in books and in class can't have important effect on us as what we have learned through personal practice. In social practice,we can surely make a\ progress in both knowledge and practical ability.,taking a parttime job,we may paid more or less to help our family. Thus,I will say a senior school student should take a parttime job in ,if possible,of course.
