We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would draw your attention to a few of our laws. The first one is drinking. Now, you may not buy wine in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you. Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly, at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet. Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful, the traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossing and don’t take any chance when crossing the road. My next point is about rubbish. It isn’t lawful to drop rubbish in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a dustbin. Finally, as regards smoking, it is against law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age. I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact the police, who will be pleased to help you. You can call, write or directly go to ask any policeman. 1. take any chance means . A.冒险,碰运气 B .趁机 C.失去机会 D.生气 2. Who do you think is most likely to make the speech? A. A guide B.A person who makes the law B. A teacher D. An English officer 3. How many laws are there discussed in the speech? A. Three B. Four C. Five D. Six 4. The main purpose of this speech is to . A. tell people those above 18 can smoke and drink there B. declare the different laws of England C. give advice to travelers to the country D. warn people against going to the country B In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses,Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Jonses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 5. It can be inferred (推断) from the story that rich people like to ________. A. live outside New York City B. live in New York city C. live in apartments D. have many neighbours 6. From the text, we know that . A. All the neighbors of Momand like to keep up with the Joneses. B. All of his neighbors don’t want to keep up with rich lifestyle. C. Momand never seems to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. D. Momand became very rich and returned to the wealthy neighborhood. 7. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is________. A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States C. his neighbour’s name D. not a good name 8. According to the writer, it is to keep up with the Joneses. A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. good C Do you know how to pick a good book you’ll really like? Here are some tips. Start With Your Interest.   9 . You can pick something that you love to read, not for school. They can be ancient martial (武术) arts, computers, or fashion design. You name it, there are books about it. What’s Your Type? Do you prefer fiction(科幻小说) or nonfiction (or both)? Fiction books, like novels, can transport you to another world or help you imagine something beyond your own experience. Nonfiction books give you the who, what, when, and why of something.   10 . Many of them read like novels from start to finish. Read the description(描述). The reviews and quotes(引语) on the back and inside covers of many books give you an idea of what the book is about. They can also help you pick future books, too. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the quotes and see which authors praised the book.   11 . Find a Family Favorite. Which book did your mother love best when she was at your age?   12 . Find out and give them a read — then you can share your thoughts about the book. Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book.    13 . You can put on some good music, get yourself some tea and let yourself be carried away by the book. You’ll see that time does fly when you’re reading something you love! A. How about your brothers and sisters? B. They tell stories using facts — but that doesn’t mean they’re boring. C. Reading is a good way to improve your English. D. Most reading is best enjoyed when you can concentrate (全神贯注) on it. E. Often, they’ll have similar styles and you might find books you like by those authors, too. F. So you should read as much as possible when you are free. G. Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school. 第三部分 完形填空(共20小题,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选。  When I was a boy, every holiday that I had seemed wonderful.
