A chowder is a kind of soup. I was laughed at because of my last name as soon as I started school. So when my family moved to South Carolina, I asked my dad if I could change my name. “You shouldn’t change who you are. Let people get to know you first and your name later. When you meet someone new, ask them a good question, something you’re really interested in. Once people start talking about themselves, they don’t judge you.” Two days later I headed to my new school for the first day of class. At lunch, I noticed that there were twin brothers who were talking to each other. I remembered my dad’s advice, so I decided to try. I noticed that their lunchboxes were identical. “What’s it like being a twin?” I asked. They looked surprised. Then one said, “No one has ever asked us that!” “Most of the time it’s good,” the other said. “When you’re a twin you always have someone to talk to and have lunch with.” In no time we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said, “I’m Nicholas, and this is my brother, Nathaniel. What’s your name?” I took a deep breath and said, “I’m Chelsea Chowderhead.” “Chowder? Like the soup?” asked Nathaniel. “Yes,” I replied, looking down. “Hey, cool! Do you want to come over after school and play basketball with us?” Nathaniel asked. I nodded. And that is how I became friends with the twin brothers. 1. Why did the writer want to change his name? A.People made fun of it. B.He wanted to make more friends. C.It was hard to remember. D.He wanted to be cool in the new school. 2. The underlined word “identical” in Paragraph 4 probably means _____________. A.big B.beautiful C.same D.full 3. When the twin brothers asked his name, the writer felt ________________. A.surprised B.nervous C.angry D.proud 4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.At last the writer changed his name. B.The twins said hello to the writer first. C.The twins also didn’t like the writer’s name. D.One can order a chowder in some restaurants. B Having a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who has a passion for literature and reading. It can be a family inheritance(继承) or it can be just to impress people around you about the fact that you are a person of culture. On the other hand, there are many persons who cannot afford to buy books, because some of them are quite expensive, but they usually go to libraries and spend hours reading something that interests them a lot, or just borrow books to read at home. From my point of view, literature is very important in our lives from several points of view. For example, reading is a means of gaining culture and enriching our knowledge in different areas of activities. It can help us have a great imagination and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field, or you can express your opinion about a political aspect, just because you have read something connected to that. Secondly, literature offers us the possibility to enter the world of imagination, and to leave apart the real one for a couple of hours. We come to meet kings and queens many years ago, dream in the world of the rich or imagine how life will be in the future. Sometimes, we identify ourselves with the characters in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve our problems and how to react in certain circumstances. To conclude, I would like to say that literature is the perfect means to enrich our culture, to express correctly and have a rich vocabulary, to be able to interfere(干涉) in conversations in different fields of interest and to really be considered an erudite person. 5. The people who are fond of literature are those that _________. A. go to libraries on weekends B. have much interest in reading C. keep many books in their studies D. buy expensive books in the bookstore 6. We can learn from the third paragraph that _________. A. we can bring kings and queens back to life B. it is very good for us to stay alone for some hours C. what we read can be useful in our daily life D. we can make friends with the people in the stories 7. The underlined word “erudite” in the last paragraph probably means_________. A. learned B. enthusiastic C. hard-working D. creative 8. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To tell readers how to read a book. B. To explain the true meaning of reading. C. To advise readers to like reading. D. To tell readers who has the real passion for literature. C As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)" According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. 9. The passage begins with two questions to ______. A. introduce the main topic B. show the author's altitude C. describe how to use the Internet. D. explain how to store information 10. What can we learn about the first experiment? A. Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer. B. The two groups remembered the information equally well. C. The first group did not try to remember the formation. D. The second group did not understand the information. 11. In transactive memory, people ______. A. keep the information in mind B. change the quantity of information C. organize information like a computer D. remember how to find the information 12. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research? A. We are using memory differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent. C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information. D Italy is widely considered to be a paradise for shopping. You can find almost all the world’s first-class brands there at reasonable prices. Some excellent purchase options are: clothes for men and women, jewellery, lacework, leather goods, ceramics(陶制品),gold and silver items. And here’s something you should never forget: Foreign tourists acquiring things in Italy can claim a sales tax rebate(回扣),provided that they spend more than 155 Euros(about 1550 yuan)at the same store on the same day. The 10 percent refund(退款)makes the prices more competitive and attractive to lots of customers. Besides this, there are some stores that offer high fashion goods at much lower prices. Italy’s fashion houses do not advertise these stores, some refuse to admit that they exist, but once you know where they are you need never pay high street prices again. Around the centre,Milan, there are quieter towns and suburbs with outlets offering huge discounts(打折)on top brand clothes and accessories. The fashion houses go around conventional retailers(零售商)to sell directly to the public. That gets rid of mark-ups that can account for half the price. But to avoid a reaction from the retailers they tend to keep it quiet ---so quiet that many fashion insiders are ignorant(不知道的)of the bargains on their doorstep. Much of the stock comes from seconds or showroom collections. Discounts of up to 70 percent are common. Most of the outlets are in the triangle between Turin,Milan and Florence. There you can get the best deals on Armani,Gucci and the other big names in fashion. To name just a few, there are Armani factory stores near Como,Dolce & Gabbano stores near Milan,Gucci factory stores near Florence, and Prada stores near Arezzo. When you travel in Italy, never forget to leave one day or two visiting the stores, there are lots of surprise. 13 .If a foreign tourist pays 155 Euros for something in the same store in Italy on the same day,he only needs to pay the store. A.139.5 euros B.145 euros C.140 euros D.150 euros 14.What does the underlined word “mark-ups” mean in the text? A. Marks on the fashion. B. Good marks for students who have made great efforts on their studies. C. Marks on top of the fashion-houses signs. D. To put a much higher price on something. 15. Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage? A. Italy--- the World’s Shopping Centre B. Going to a Paradise in Italy C. Italy--- a Shoppers’ Paradise D. Italy ---a Paradise for Business 第二节 (共5小题, 每小题2分, 共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Improve Vocabulary Fast Your vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. We should learn some ways to expand it. Read every day. 16 Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know. 17 If you do not meet with an unfamiliar word in your daily reading, use your dictionary to search for one. Learn the correct definition and pronunciation for each new word. Pronunciation is as important as definition because in order to add a word to your active vocabulary, you must be able to use it in speech. Elaborate(阐释)on the meaning of the word. Use imagery and personal relevance. If you have just learned the word “stubborn”, think about the neighbor who will not lend you his car. 18 Use your new word in speech and in writing. E-mail your sister about how your cat is stubborn about sleeping on your pillow. 19 But the more you use it, the more fluent you will become in its use. Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary. Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary. Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is. 20 The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it. A. Find a new word every day. B. The vocabulary can be increased. C. Your vocabulary contains the words you understand. D. The more often you read, the faster your vocabulary can grow. E. Or let them ask for the definition of a new word you have used. F. Imagine him shaking his head, and think of him as “stubborn in his refusal”. G. The first time you use a new word in speech, it may seem clumsy and forced. 第二部分 完型填空(共20小题:每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Burglars are probably the most unpopular visitors to your house.
