With the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty(死刑). Many argue that it is an effective deterrent(威慑) to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders. The argument advanced by those opposed to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is the mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime anyway. In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous than others. For example, it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher(屠夫). Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first example should be only kept from society, such should not be the fate(命运) of the latter(后者) type murderer. The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in California, the murder rate (比率)remained between three and four murders for each 100, 000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen to 10.4 murders for each 100, 000 population. The sharp climb in the state's murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does dete(威慑)r many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed(否决), some people will be murdered — some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected. 59. The main purpose of this passage is to _______. A. speak for the majority B. support a veto C. speak ill of the government D. argue for the value of the death penalty 60. Which of the following is among the heated arguments across the USA besides death penalty? A. Air pollution. B. The war against Iraq. C. Equal rights. D. Election of president. 61. The numbers in the last paragraph show that _______. A. if they keep death penalty, the number of murders will be reduced B. death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963 C. the population of California has risen D. death penalty is of little value 62. It can be inferred that the writer thinks that _______. A. the death penalty is the most important problem in the United States today B. the second type of murderers(in Paragraph 4) should be sentenced to death C. the death penalty makes no difference to the murder rate. D. the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not to be discussed 参考答案: DCAB 解析:本文讲述了美国关于是否废除死刑所引发的争论。 59. D。主旨题。可从第一段找到答案。第一段是全文的主题句,提出了是否废除死刑的两种不同观点。 60. C。细节题。根据 With the possible exception of equal rights可推知此题答案为C。 61. A。推断题。根据Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the murder rate has risen to 10.4 murders for each 100, 000 population. 可以推知,执行死刑可有效地降低谋杀案件的发生。 62. B。推断题。根据the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer可知,那些过失杀人的犯人可以使他们远离社会(坐牢),而那些恶.意的、故意杀人犯则不应当是这种命运,即应判死刑。 22. Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $ 3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or A. I. , to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic. The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers at Brown’s Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars. It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliott bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Elliott is at work. Elliott said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater. The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people. 28. What’s the purpose of the project? A. To relieve the pain of the elderly. B. To promote the sales of a medicine. C. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly. D. To help make the robotic cat smarter. 29. Compared with the old model, the new robotic cat will be . A. smaller B. cheaper C. more talkative D. more expensive 30. What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us? A. The cat gives much help to the elderly. B. The more functions of the cat, the better. C. There is no cure for dementia at present. D. Mary Derr would have died without the cat. 参考答案: DBA展开阅读全文
