Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on a two-penny stamp has made it worth a million and a half times its face value. Maybe you think it impossible. But it is true. And this is how it happened. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the former British colony(殖民地)of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to London. Mauritius was about to become the fourth country in the world to put out stamps. Before the order was filled and the stamps arrived from England, a big dance was planned by the commander-in-chief of all the armed forces on the island. The dance would be held in his house and letters of invitation would be sent to all the important people in Mauritius. Stamps were badly needed to post the letters. Therefore, an islander, who was a good printer, was told to copy the pattern of the stamps. He carelessly put the word “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid”, two words seen on stamps at that time, on the several hundred that he printed. Today, there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left --- fourteen One-penny Reds and twelve Two-penny Blues. Because there are so few Two-Penny Blues and because of their age, collectors have paid as much as $16,800 for one of them. 21. When a mistake is made in the printing of the stamp, the stamp _____________. A. will become useless and thrown away B. is worth no more than its face value C. is well worth buying D. may increase in value 22. Why did Mauritius print some stamps too? Because _____________. A. London stamps were not well printed B. London would not print them C. invitations to a big dance had to be posted quickly D. Mauritius had a very good printer 23. The mistake on the island-printed stamps was in the ___________. A. price B. design C. spelling of words D. wrong use of words 24. What can be inferred from the passage? A. In the 1840’s most countries of the world were not yet using stamps B. Only in England were stamps printed C. All people like to buy misprinted stamps D. Stamps with printing mistakes are worth more than sixteen thousand dollars B Joanne was stuck in a traffic jam in central Birmingham at 5:30 and at 6:30 she was expected to be chairing a meeting of the tennis club. At last, the traffic was moving. She swung quickly racing to her house. As she opened the door, she nearly tripped over Sheba. “Hey, Sheba,” she said, “I’ve got no time for you now, but I’ll take you out as soon as I get back from tennis club.” Then she noticed Sheba seemed to be coughing or choking. Obviously, she could hardly breathe. Immediately, Joanne realized she would have to take her to the vet(兽医). When she got there, the vet was just about to close for the day. Seeing the state of Sheba, Dr. Sterne brought her quickly into his office. “Listen, doctor, I’m really in a rush to get to a meeting. Can I leave her with you, and go and get changed? I’ll be back in ten minutes to pick her up, and then I’ll take her on to the meeting with me. Is that OK?” “Sure.” said the doctor. Joanne made the quick trip back to her house in a couple of minutes. As she was once more entering the hall, the phone by the door began to ring. “This is Dr. Sterne,” said an anxious voice. “I want you to get out of that house immediately,” said the doctor’s voice. “I’m coming round right away, and the police will be there any time now. Wait outside!” At that moment, a police car screeched to a stop outside the house. Two policemen got out and ran into the house. Joanne was by now completely confused and very frightened. Then the doctor arrived. “Where’s Sheba? Is she OK?” shouted Joanne. “She is fine, Joanne. I took out the thing which was choking her, and she’s OK now.” Just then, the two policemen reappeared from the house, half-carrying a white-faced man, who could hardly walk. There was blood all over him. “My God,” said Joanne, “how did he get in there? And how did you know he was there?” “I think he must be a burglar.” said the doctor. “I knew he was there because when I finally removed what was stuck in Sheba’s throat: it turned out to be three human fingers.” 25.From the passage we can infer that _________. A. the police found the burglar had broken in B. Joanne had planned to take her dog to the meeting at first C. Sheba fought against the burglar D. the doctor performed a difficult operation on the dog 26.The underlined word a burglar in the last paragraph probably means _________. A. thief B. physician C. cleaner D. murderer 27.In this passage, the writer intends to tell us that the dog is __________. A. clever and strong B. brave and loyal C. frightening and successful D. friendly and smart 28.Which of the following statements is true? A. Joanne had no time to take Sheba to the vet because she had to go to a meeting. B. It was the doctor who found what the dog had done had called the police.. C. The woman left the dog with the vet and picked her up after the meeting. D. The woman was warned not to enter the house because there was a burglar. C Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are usual, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful. 29. Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon? A. Because you eat too much for lunch. B. Because it’s hot in summer. C. Because your body temperature goes down at that time. D. Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night. 30. What can we learn about “naps” according to the last paragraph? A. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day. B. Doctors need to take naps while employers don’t. C. If you take naps every day, you’ll never suffer from heart disease. D. Taking naps regularly is good for people’s health. 31. What would be the best title for the text? A. Just for a Rest B. A1l for a Nap C. A Special Sleep Pattern D. Taking Naps in Warmer Climate D Fish have ears. Really. They're quite small and have no opening to the outside world carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths. As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate (碳酸钙). By looking through a microscope (显微镜) and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish's age, just like the growth rings of a tree. Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new direction. They're examining the chemical elements (元素) of each otolith ring. The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring. Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history. In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the travelling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles. This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about the whereabouts (行踪) of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears. 32. What can we learn about fish ears from the text? A. They are small soft rings. B. They are not seen from the outside. C. They are openings only on food fish. D. They are not used to receive sound. 33. Why does the writer compare the fish to trees? A. Trees gain a growth ring each day. B. Trees also have otoliths. C. Their growth rings are very small. D. They both have growth rings. 34. Why is it important to study the chemistry of otolith rings? A. The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea. B. Chemical contents (含量) of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim. C. We can know more about fish and their living environment. D. Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is. 35. How would you understand "fish scientists are now lending their ears"? A. They are very interested in Thorrold's research findings. B. They want to know where they can find fish. C. They lend their fish for chemical studies. D. They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Carpooling(拼车) can be similar to a joy ride experience. If you are a driver and are thinking if joining a carpool, here are the reasons why you should go ahead with it. ____36____ Pollution is one of the major concerns and with thousands of cars moving on roads, the amount of carbon emissions is increasing day by day.
