The lands of the Middle East are so hot and dry that much of their surface is almost lifeless. But here in the Red Sea, coral reefs flourish wonderfully. The waters offshore are almost as rich in life as a rain forest And some animals come to the reefs simply for rest and relaxation. The family of bottlenose dolphins are resting on the reef after a night’s feeding offshore. Whilst the adults and their babies sleep, the adolescents set off to explore. And they appear to make up games. You might call this one, “Catch the coral.” PART B: Role Play角色扮演(满分16分) In this part, you are required to act as a role and complete three communicative tasks: listen to a speaker, ask the speaker three questions and then answer five questions. 角色:你是视频中的男子Tom。 任务:(1)与视频中的女子Mary谈论当遇到事情的时候应该如何处理的问题; (2)根据对话内容回答问题。 1.Now please ask the speaker three questions. 问题1:现在请准备提出第一个问题。(中文提示:你通常怎样与你的朋友分享事情?) If the high temperatures are sustained, coral, bleached in this way, is likely to die. In recent years, it’s thought that half the world’s coral reefs have been affected by bleaching, including, since 2016, around two thirds of the shallow water corals on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. These once crowded submarine cities are reduced to bleak ruins, and many of their inhabitants left homeless. Some scientists predict that by the end of the century, coral reef cities, as we know them, could be a thing of the past. Is there any future for these most precious of ocean treasures? Here are some of the best places across the UK for your whole family to enjoy the quality time together in nature. Drove Orchards (果园), Thornham, Norfolk Drove shines a bit brighter each autumn, when it starts delivering fruit. Many of the fresh apples and pears there are ready-picked as well as PYO (short for pick-your-own): Also juice made from the orchards’ special varieties of apples is strongly recommended. Opening time: 10 am〜4 pm daily until the end of October (booking not necessary but checking what’s fruiting before visiting at ) Blooming Green, Linton, Kent Blooming Green is a “no-dig” flower business, selling flowers directly to customers and opening for PYO activities from summer to the end of October. In November and December there are wreath-making (花环制作) workshops, where participants pick their favorite flowers. Opening time: 10 am〜4 pm on Saturdays only (with pre-booking of one-hour slots, bloominggreenflowers.co.uk) Towerbrook Farm, Banwell, Somerset Like many other forms, Towerbrook Farm offers pick-your-own and cut-your- own service. But it’s the first place that offers dig-your-ovvn Christmas trees, meaning you can take your tree back after the holiday and replant it there, which allows you to avoid sending your tree to the recycling centre. Opening time: 8 am 〜4 pm daily between 20 November and 30 December (pre-booking not necessary) Shute Fruit, Bishopsteignton, South Devon As well as selling preserves made from kinds of berries (浆果), Shute Fruit also manages an extensive pick-your-won operation. There you can pick your own sloe berries. If you are a fan of sloe gin, a kind of alcoholic drink, whose alcohol content is between 15 and 30 percent, ask the farm for recipes to make your own sloe gin at home. Opening time: 11 am 〜5 pm daily except rainy days and Mondays, until the end of October (booking not necessary, shutefruit.co.uk) 1. What is worth a try in Drove Orchards? A. Planting an apple tree. The story of moon trees started in 1971, when Apollo 14 launched a mission to the moon The mission pilot, was Stuart Roosa, a former U.S. Forest Service smoke jumper When he was selected for the job, he was contacted by Ed Cliff, the chief of the Forest Service, who asked if Roosa could help scientists as they were curious about whether tree seeds, after their journey into the space, would grow as normal. Roosa agreed and he selected five species of tree seeds. The seeds were then sorted and divided into two same sets. One was packed into his personal travel kit and then taken to the moon. The other was left on Earth as a control sample. On Jan. 31, 1971, Roosa, along with other astronauts, took off on the third mission to the moon. Unfortunately, after returning to Earth, the kit burst open due to an accident of decontamination (消毒). The crew thought the seeds were no longer useful. After being shipped to the Forest Service labs, nearly all the seeds began to grow. After a few years, the Forest Service had over 420 seedlings (幼苗) which looked exactly the same as their Earth-bound equivalents (相等的东西). In 1975 and 1976, most of the young trees were given away to be planted in various states for the country’s 200th celebration. Not all states received moon trees because the trees were southern and western species from warm states and wouldn’t have grown in other climates. Other young moon trees found homes in the U.S. such as at the White House, the Kennedy Space Station in Florida, Goddard Space in Flight Center in Maryland, Washington Square in Pennsylvania, and various universities. Some trees were even given away as gifts to other countries. The number of moon trees has increased over the years, as cuttings are taken from moon trees and replanted. These second-generation moon trees are called half-moon trees. Roosa passed away in 1994, but a moon tree stands over his grave in Virginia. 4. What was Roosa expected to do? A. Take some tree seeds to the moon. B. Recommend Ed Cliff to the mission pilot. C. Contact the chief commander for permission. D. Return to the Forest Service after his mission. 5. What happened to the seeds after the accident? A. They were kept in the kit. B. They were no longer useful. C. They survived and grew well. D. They were infected with some diseases. 6. Which state was less likely to receive a young moon tree? A. Florida. B. Pennsylvania. C. Maryland. D. Alaska. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. The mystery-of moon trees. B. Roosa’s contributions to space exploration. C. The distribution of moon trees in the world. D. The difference between moon trees and normal ones. C Recently, researchers compared teachers and parents’ evaluation of children who started kindergarten in 1998 — six years before Facebook was launched — with that of those who began school in 2010, when the first iPad was released. The idea for the study came several years ago when Downey, lead author of the study, had an argument at a pizza restaurant with his son, Nick, about whether social skills had declined among the new generation of youth. “Nick asked me how I knew that. And that was when I realized there really wasn’t any solid evidence,” Downey said. So Downey, with his colleagues, decided to investigate. For their study, they used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS), which is run by the National Center for Educational Statistics. The ECLS follows children from kindergarten to fifth grade. The researchers compared data on the children who began kindergarten in 1998 (19,150 students) with that on those beginning kindergarten in 2010 (13,400 students). Results showed that children’s social skills did not decline between the 1998 and 2010 groups. And similar patterns remained as the children progressed to fifth grade. Even children within the two groups who had the heaviest exposure to screens showed similar development in social skills compared to those with little screen exposure. While Downey was initially surprised to see that time spent on screens didn’t affect social skills, he really shouldn’t have been. “There is a tendency for every generation at my age to start to have concerns about the younger generation. It is an old story,” he said. These worries often involve “moral panic” over new technology. Adults are concerned when technological change starts to undermine traditional relationships, particularly the parent-child relation-ship. New generations are learning that having good social relationships means being able to communicate successfully both face to face and online. “You have to know how to communicate by email, on Facebook and Twitter, as well as face to face. We just looked at face-to-face social skills in this study, but future studies should look at digital social skills as well,” Downey said. 8. Why did Downey carry out the study? A. To teach his son a lesson. B. To support his point of view. C. To improve kids’ social skills. D. To free kids from screens. 9. What’s the theme of Downey’s investigation? A. The progress of early childhood’s social skills. B. The measure to enhance children’s social skills. C. The impact of network on children’s social skills. D. The link between children’s social skills and their age. 10. What does the underlined word “undermine” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Damage. B. Enhance. C. Demonstrate. D. Emphasize. 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Young people are better at digital social skills. B. Downey realized the necessity of digital devices. C. Face-to-face communication may disappear one day. D. Researchers may readjust evaluation of social skills. D There are lots of nice stories about the healing of nature as humans suspend their activity. However, this slowdown is not all good news. New York City, for example, has suspended its organic recycling program. That means thousands of tons of garbage that would have been recycled last year will find their way to landfills instead this year. Like other New Yorkers, I recycled my kitchen waste and other organic materials. When they rot, they produce methane (甲烷), which if let loose can be harmful to the atmosphere. But when captured in a controlled way, the methane can be put to use as alternative energy. Plus, there is a by-product — fertilizer, which can be sold on the market. Now those thousands of tons of trash (垃圾) will be trucked away to landfills in Ohio and other remote places. It’s definitely a step backward in our, fight against climate change. Government leaders may get some inspiration from New York City’s Freshkills Park. The park is a best-case scenario (方案) for what can happen to mountains of garbage. It was originally the Fresh Kills Landfill which received garbage for more than half a century. In 2001, the dump was closed. The Freshkills Park, around three times the size of Central Park, will be opened in 2035. What is under the park is pretty complex, even if it just looks like a grassy hill. There are a few layers, each for different purposes. As for the methane, the park has hundreds of wells to capture the gas, which is enough to power 20,000 homes. Trees are tricky at the park because their roots can’t go that far down. As well, most grasslands only have shallow-rooted grasses so that the staff can easily get access to the wellheads. The project brings go
