The Noodle House is small, but very popular. The noodle soup tastes very good, and the fried noodles with roast pork are delicious. Everything is clean and the staffs are friendly. Prices are good too, but you may have to wait quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy. Roma is a new restaurant. It is very smart, but the pizzas here do not taste good. We didn’t eat our fish as it smelled bad. The waiters looked angry and we thought it was very expensive. This restaurant has to improve. The Tokyo Restaurant has been here for many years, and the staffs bow to customers when they enter and are very kind. The fish is very fresh and most of the food is delicious. The amount of food you get is quite small, but it always looks nice on the plate. The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant. It has a lot of different food. The sweet and sour pork is excellent, the Beijing Duck is famous, and the winter melon soup is good. Go there for a really good meal, but expect to pay a lot. Prices are high. The Come in Coffee Shop is very modern. There are many sorts of coffee and if you like sweet things, wait until you taste their cakes and cookies! That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor’s degree. Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition (学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling. Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times. Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed (牺牲)to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. “Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers," she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family --- and that’s pretty powerful. 4. What did Jennifer do after high school? A. She helped her dad with his work. B. She ran the family farm on her own. C. She supported herself through college. D. She taught her sisters and brothers at home. 5. Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield? A. To take care of her kids easily. B. To learn from the best nurses. C. To save money for her parents. D. To find a well-paid job there. 6. What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal? A. Her health. B. Her time with family. C. Her reputation. D. Her chance of promotion. 7. What can we learn from Jennifer’s story? A. Time is money. B. Love breaks down barriers. C. Hard work pays off. D. Education is the key to success. C Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony(和谐) in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. Recent research has found a new secret of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than six months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly likely that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while fighting was observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attacking, while a dog doing the same signals giving in. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”. What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously thought. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom(梳理) each other. The meaning of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets---to people who don’t get along, including neighbours, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance. 8.The underlined word “swimmingly” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “_______________”. A.early B. quickly C. sweetly D. violently 9.Some cats and dogs may fight when ________________. A.they are cold to each other B.they look away from each other C.they are introduced at an early age D.they misunderstand each other’s signals 10.It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs _____________. A.have common interest B.are less different than we thought C.have common body language D.are less intelligent than we expected 11.What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs? A.We should learn to live in harmony. B.We should know more about animals C.We should live in peace with animals. D.We should learn more body language. D It is a finding which is certain to be hotly discussed. According to the latest research, women are brighter than men. For the first time in IQ testing, psychologists have found that female scores have risen above those of men. Since IQ testing began a century ago, women have been as much as five points behind. But that gap has been narrowing in recent years and this year women have moved ahead, according to James Flynn, leader of the research. “In the last 100 years the IQ scores of both men and women have risen but women’s have risen faster,” said Mr. Flynn. “This is a consequence (结果)of modernity, which is making our brains adapt (适应) and raising our IQ.” One possible explanation is that women’s lives have become more demanding as they multitask (同时处理) between raising a family and doing a job. Another is that women have a slightly higher potential intelligence than men and are only now realizing it. Mr. Flynn, who will publish his findings in a book, said more data was needed to explain the trend(趋势). “The full effect of modernity on women isonly just starting,” he added. He compared IQ result from countries in western Europeand from the United States, Canada, NewZealand, Argentina and Estonia. These showed that in westernized countries the gap in scores between men and women had become minimal (最小). The data for making comparison(对比) was limited and could be carried out for only a few countries. It included Australia, where male and female IQs were found to be almost the same. In New Zealand, Estonia and Argentina, women scored slightly more than men. Mr. Flynn said, “As the world gets more complex, people are adapting.” He added, “I suspect that the same trends are happening in Britain, although the data is too limited to be true.” 12.
