B Millions of people all over the world use the word okay.In fact, some people say the word is used more often than any other word in the world. It may be common, but no one can seem to agree on how the "OK" came to be. Okay means "all right" or "acceptable".It expresses agreement or approval. You might ask your brother, “Is it okay if I borrow your car?”Or if someone asks you to do something, you might say,"Okay,I will."Still, language experts do not agree about where the word came from. Some people say it came from the Native American Indian tribe known as the Choctaw. The Choctaw word "okeh" means the same as the American word okay. Experts say early explorers in the American West spoke the Choctaw language in the nineteenth century. The language spread across the country. But many people dispute(争论)this. Language expert Allen Walker Read wrote about the word okay in reports published in the 1960s.He said the word began being used in the 1830s.It was a short way of writing a different spelling of the words "all correct."Some foreign﹣born people wrote "all correct" as "o﹣1﹣1k﹣o﹣r﹣r﹣e﹣c﹣t."and used the letters O.K. Other people say a railroad worker named Obadiah Kelly invented the word long ago. They said he put the first letters of his names﹣O and K﹣on each object people gave him to send on the train. Still others say a political organization invented the word. The organization supported Martin Van Buren for president in 1840.They called their group, the O.K.Club.The letters were taken from the name of the town where Martin Van Buren was born﹣Old Kinderhook,New York. Not everyone agrees with this explanation, either. But experts do agree that the word is purely American. And it has spread to almost every country on Earth. 24.What is the text mainly about? A.How the word Okay came into being. B.The different meanings of the word Okay. C.The dispute of the origin of the word Okay. D.How widely the word Okay is used. 25.What does the underlined word Okay express in the 2nd example in Paragraph 2? A.Promise. B.Admission. C.Permission. D.Correctness. 26. Choctaw is an ______ word. A. indian B. India C.Euroopean D.American expiorer’s 27. What do language experts agree on? A.Okay is the most widely﹣used word. B.It came from some Indian dialect. C.It was invented by a politician. D.It is first used by Americans. The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked 2,600teenagers aged 15 and 16. They asked them how many times they checked their phones and other digital devices for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD. After two years, those who had checked their phones the mostoften were twice as likely as those who checked the least often to show signs of ADHD. Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists said, “Modern mediadevices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or videogame play invitations arrive. Exposure to such information may drawattention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction could interrupt thedevelopment of constant attention and organization skills.” They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous research had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. “What’s new is that previous studies on thistopic were done many years ago, when social media, mobile phones, tablets andmobile apps didn’t exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposedto higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHDsymptoms in the future,” he said. Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how newmobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk forchildren. And the findings serve as a warning. British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of theOxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided bythe students in question. It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the childrensimilarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with eitheractual behavior or higher quality survey items.” 32. How did the researchers conduct the study? A. By tracking the participants for two years. B. By monitoring 2,600 teenagers wit ADHD. C. By analyzing data from previous researches online. D. By controlling different teens’ time spent on social media. 33. What does Leventhal think of the exposure to higher levels of digital media? A. It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms. B. It will have a major influence on organization skills. C. It will weaken teenagers’ confidence. D. It will create higher ADHD risks. 34. What does Professor Andy Przybylski think of the study? A. It provides a better understanding of the media. B. It should have focused on parents’ responses. C. Its findings are not reliable enough. D. It’s a breakthrough in this field. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The use of digital media is on the rise B. Heavy use of social media may increase ADHD risks C. Teens are increasingly exposed to ADHD D. Teens’ exposure to modern media calls more attention 第二节 (共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Making the Most of Life Experiences If you ask anyone what the purpose of life is, you’ll likely receive wildly different responses. The answer to this question is deeply personal because different things are important to us throughout the course of our lives. 36 Finding ways to make the most of our experiences is a challenge we face every day. Here are some ways to make your experiences meaningful. Follow your dreams. The number one way to live a life free of regret is to follow your dreams. Passion will die without actions supporting them. 37 Every day take an action, no matter how small, to achieve your goals. Each day is a step forward and none of it is wasted. Make lots of mistakes. __38___ Many of my strongest memories come from the times I’ve failed, and those lessons have stayed with me. Failure is beneficial to us. And time allows me to see the value of even the most painful situation. 39 Difficult and painful experiences shape our character but can also weigh us down. These prevent us from moving forward. So much of our progress in life relies on willpower and a healthy emotional state. If you’re under stress, your body and mind both require time to recover. 40 For me, life is about experiences. We all have to dream, work hard, and fail before we can achieve success. Maybe we’ll discover along the way that the journey is more important than the destination . A. Take care of yourself. B. Improve your responsibility(责任心). C. Making mistakes is the surest path to grow as a person. D. It’s best to rest, recover, and slowly build back up your strength. E. Yet one thing stays with us no matter where we go: our experiences. F. Though we try our best to make fewer mistakes, it is impossible to avoid them. G.
