all concern Mrs.Sheridan accuses Laura of being absurd when she wants to cancel the party because of the accident, and tries to infect Laura with her own vanity by bring the girl with her new hat so that she would forget the incident.o vain and selfish Wants her daughters to be cheerful and not resist her in anything. When Laura insists that the party be cancelled because of the death,Mrs.Sheridan is at first amused:She refused to take Laura seriouslyo demand too much of her child However,as Laura persists, her mother grows impatient very quickly. She has to have things her way.Trying to make Laura think as she does and share her values and lifestyle. She has already succeeded in brainwashing her other daughters, especially Jose vJose Similar to her mother in the attitude toward Scotts death-indifferent,pitiless and practical Focusing on superficiality while ignoring reality. Her classs complete separation from the lower class, unable to even empathize with them.vLaura Dreamy, idealistic middle daughter Represents the central conflict in the story “Better than her sister and mother, she is still naive about class-looking closely at her interactions with the workmen.Touched by a newborn social conscience and her sense of romantic tragedy intact.Able to overlook and ignore the stereotypes that were imputed into her mind about people who were“beneath”her.Able to use her own observations and experiences with people to make her own decisions about people.Laura blossomed into a more open-minded and compassionate person.o Questions about laura What if Laura could have stopped the party? Why doesnt she want to go into the house-what might she learn? What do you make of her thoughts that the dead man is wonderful, beautiful?Lauras mother does not seem to have much of an effect on Laurie, perhaps this is why Laura values his opinions more than those of the other family members vlaurie If Laurie agreed with the others, then it was bound to be all right”With Lauries help,Laura may be able to keep on resisting her mothers bad influence.qTheme deals with Lauras movement from her simplistic view of her life to the more complicated. This movement is facilitated by the recognition of class distinction.morality plays which dramatize significant moments in shallow lives and show how tragedy can transcend the trivia The Theme of Death a story about an instance of human recognition of the reality of life, which seems so frightening to an upper-classed girl. But it is life,it is the way how we grow upThe importance of the song Parallel symbolismcontrastTechniques employedImagesqContrast 1 peaceful and perfect and in a way synthetic and shallow.darker and deeper, shadowed by the realities of povertyTwo worlds qContrast 2Sheridans residence:yellow:fruits of the Karaka-trees green:the baize door crimson:Canna lilies silver:smoke out of their chimney Outside the Sheridans residence:No colors at all were mentioned except for the chocolate brown“color of their pokey little holes.color used in the two worldqContrast 3Butterfly:Jose,as the butterfly.harmless and graceful, pleasantly accenting a garden with its own color and distinction.Butterfly and bugBug:Ems(the widow)sister is described as a little creature.A little creature could be seen in a negative sense being associated with an unwelcomed little bug in a garden, unable to fit in.q Symbolism 1Its immediate effect is to block communication with Laurie. It presents laura with a new life-style:as a charming girl.It shows her transformation from child to woman.Blackness represents death and sufferingDaisies symbolize necessary and instinctive maturity.Hat:black hat trimmed with gold daisies, and a long black velvet Roses:the roses were God sent and meant to be worshipped. It shows Sheridans being associated with beautiful flowers that are expected to be bowed down to.q Symbolism 2 Bushes:the bushes were meant tobow down to the roses as though the roses were better than the bushes.bush can be perceived as being a darker plant and not a colorful flower.bushes and rosesqSymbolism 3The garden represented the growth and expansions of Lauras perceptions about people who were different or less fortunate than her self. The gardenqParallel 1 Two social rituals-the celebrations of the rich family, and the solemnity of death for the poor ones.qParallel 2Two kinds of sentiment:vThe false sentiment of Joses songs displays her vanity rather than her love for music.vSimultaneously, the song echoes the emotional disaster near at hand.qImportant images Food:cream puffs, sandwiches, etc. The black feather hat:Convinces Laura to go along with party, makes her feel ridiculous later at wake Lilies-Mrs.Sheridan buys every lily in town that morning;doesnt bring them to Mrs.Scott qThe importance of the songThree definitions of the word weary very tired after exertion or endurance. No longer interested in,tired of.Tiring,tedious.This story investigates the distinction between class, much of the time, through their different associations with the term weary.“This Life is Weary This song becomes a means through which Mansfield points out the ironic falseness of the upper class position, their limiting view of the world, and the point at which real weariness enters into the tension between classes.Joses singing of This Life is Weary works to point out the superficiality of the Sheridans class position and way of living Weariness-Sheridans view of the neighbors below the hill that their lives are squalid, unfulfilling and weary. The case of Laura suggests the possibility of real weariness.so she succumbs to her role as daughter, beauty and hostess suggest the problems which maintain class distinction, through false representations of both the self and other.StyleEarly practitioner of stream-of-consciousness narration(writing as a person might think-in disjointed phrases, unrelated snippets, meandering thoughts)Her reputation rests entirely on her work as a short story writer.More interested in illumination of character than plot.Treats universal themes such as family and love relationships, everyday experiences of childhood.Look for wit, psychological acuity, and perceptive characterizationsqComment 1 Daiches believes that Mansfields work contains some of the most sensitive writing in our literature. He remarks that She writes only to tell the truth-not the truth for the outsider, for the observer who watches the action form the street corner, but the truth for the characters themselves and so the real meaning of the situation. This meaning nearly always involves some kind of change.qComment 2 Mansfields stories cover their tracks;they have an air of serene inevitability, almost a touch of the miraculous.“Mansfield stands for elusiveness, instability, fragmentation, incompleteness and absence.“There lay a young man, fast asleep-sleeping so soundly,so deeply, that he was far,far away from them both.Oh,so remote,so peaceful. He was dreaming.Never wake him up again”.Hes not dead-hes just asleeprepresent a young girls first and poignant attempts to come to terms with deathUnderstanding some sentences Forgive my hat she recognizes how out of place she is in this situation.Lauras brother:Isnt it darling as a collusion between Laura and her brother over the lower class as an empathic indication that he understands what she has gone through as an attempt to shut her up as an indication that when faced with something inexplicable, they reach for the clichs of their class. Thanks for your Attention
