Reading prehension (30%) Passage One: Trees should only be pruned(修剪) when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches. And the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is essential to make the area which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint is with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 1. Pruning should be done to ___B___. A. make the tree grow taller. B. improve the shape of the tree. C. get rid of the small branches. D. Make the small branches thicker. 2. Trees bee unhealthy if the gardener ___A___. A. allows too many branches to grow in the middle B. does not protect them from the wind C. forces them to grow too quickly D. damages some of the small side branches 3. Why is a special substance painted on the tree? B A. to make a wound smooth. B. to prevent disease entering a wound. C. to cover a rough surface D. to help a wound to dry 4. A good gardener prunes a tree ___C___. A. at intervals throughout the year B. as quickly as possible C. occasionally when necessary D. regularly every winter 5. What was author’s purpose when writing this passage? A A. to give practical instructions for pruning a tree. B. to give a general description of pruning. C. to explain how trees develop diseases. D. To discuss different methods of pruning. Passage Two: For the most part, rapid economic development has been a boon. But there is a down side to development – health problems such as overweight are all being more prevalent, as more people take taxis to work instead of riding their bicycles, and other labor-saving devices bee more popular. An increasing fast pace of life makes it difficult for people to spend time working out or playing sports. “I know exercise is good for your health,” a young lady said. “But after a busy work week, the only thing I want to do is watch some TV and go to sleep.” That attitude may explain the results of a recent nationwide study, which suggested 15 percent of urban adults I China are overweight, a large number of people over the age of 40 suffer from high blood pressure and cardiac ailments. Local researchers found that 31.2 percent of elderly respondents were getting enough exercise, but less than 9 percent of youngsters and the middle-aged got an adequate amount of physical activity. Elderly people understand the importance of protecting their health. The young people, however, are busy working and use this as an excuse to avoid exercise. In fact, physical exercise doesn’t require much time, money or a special gymnasium. People can make use of any time and any place at their convenience to take part in sports. Walking quickly, cycling, climbing the stairs and dancing are all helpful methods to enhance one’s health. The benefits of adding a little more activity to your lift are priceless. “There is no need to be an athlete, however,” a local doctor said. People should walk for 30 minutes a day and take part in other physical activity three to five times a week. He warns, however, that people in poor physical shape should start slowly, and build up over time. China has taken the need for more exercise to heart, with the government running several activities last Sunday, which was the designated World Health Day. Pamphlets and posters based on the theme “Move for Health” were distributed nationwide, encouraging people to develop a positive and healthy lifestyle. 6. Rapid economic development has resulted in all the following except __D__. A. an increasing number of taxi passengers B. the wide use of labor-saving devices C. an increasingly fast pace of life D. people’s awareness of the importance of exercise 7. Some people are getting overweight because __A__. A. they are too busy to have any time for exercise B. they are ignorant of the benefits of exercise C. they are too weak to participate in physical activity D. they are short of money to pay for different exercises 8. According to the passage, who need regular daily exercise most? B A. People taking taxis to work. B. Urban adults with full-time jobs. C. Elderly people suffering from high blood pressure. D. Youngsters dreaming of being professional athletes. 9. What is the main idea of the last paragraph but one? C A. Many people are still unable to afford the cost of physical exercises. B. Nobody should take part in physical activity in order to be an athlete. C. Moderate physical exercise is usually enough for ordinary people. D. Old or sick people should only take part in physical exercises of the slowest type. 10. By referring to rapid economic development as “a boon” at the beginning of the passage, the author means that _ A___. A. it has benefited the general public greatly B. it has done harm to people’s health nationwide C. it is going faster than anyone could have imagined D. it has helped to establish a positive and health lifestyle of the public Passage Three: Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to dispose of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem – how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which utilizes not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus’s six buildings fortable. Some parts of most modern buildings – theaters and offices as well as classrooms – are more than amply heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called “heat recovery”. A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University’s system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others. Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students emit more heat than female students, and the larger a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard-working, overweight male genius. 11. Until recently, body heat has caused problems because it__C___. A. was difficult to collect B. came in variety of forms C. was difficult to get rid of it D. tended to be absorbed by physical objects 12. Which of the following is true of the heating system of the Johnstown campus? B A. The heat is supplied by human bodies B. The heat is supplied by both human bodies and other heat-emitting objects C. The heat is supplied by both human bodies and conventional fuel D. The heat is supplied by human bodies, other heat-emitting objects, and conventional fuel 13. At the Johnstown campus, how many of the buildings are heated entirely by the heat collection system? D A. None B. Two C. Four D. Six 14. According to the passage, which of the following would produce the LEAST amount of heat? B A. A fat female who studies hard B. A thin female who does not study C. A fat male who does not study D. We encourage all students to volunteer for at least one munity activity before they graduate. A new munity program called “One On One” helps elementary students who’ve fallen behind. Your education majors might be especially interested in it because it offers the opportunity to do some teaching, that is, tutoring in math and English. You’d have to volunteer two hours a week for one semester. You can choose to help a child with math, English, or both. Half-hour lessons are fine, so you could do a half hour of each subject two days a week. Professor Dodge will act as a mentor to the tutors ---- he’ll be available to help you with lesson plans or to offer suggestions for activities. He has office hours every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. You can sign up for the program with him and begin the tutoring next week. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this munity service … and you’ll gain valuable e展开阅读全文
