As it turns out, the stomach might also be very powerful with a new electronic pill inside it. The new electronic pill, equipped with a Wi-Fi transmitter, is swallowed and can harvest energy from inside a person’s own stomach to record core(核心)body temperature and then send the health data to an outside monitor. The model can power itself for nearly a week—much longer than current absorbable devices, which are placed inside the body and only can share health information for less than an hour. “To make the device work even longer, and see if the stomach’s acid could power the device, we used tiny pieces of copper and zinc for experiments.” said Philip Nadeau, an electrical engineer who designed the device together. The Wi-Fi devices fit inside a capsule but unfold when they hit the stomach and deliver drugs for long periods of time before they break down and pass through the body. This Wi-Fi pill could lead to fresh opportunities for drug delivery or real-time health monitoring from inside organs, said Giovanni Traverso, a doctor and biomedical engineer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who c0-led a study of the pill published recently in Nature Biomedical Engineering. Despite our many medical advances, we’re pretty bad at measuring core body temperature. A recent study of 8,600 patients found that thermometer(温度计)readings from the mouth or skin did a lousy job of measuring core temperature. Getting an accurate temperature is important. Traverso and Nadeau are also aiming to shrink(缩小)the pill to the size of a tablet. “Temperature tracking is just the first of many ways the medical community can use the device.” Traverse thinks. 1、What is WRONG about the Wi-Fi pill? A.The Wi-Fi device is powered by itself. B.The pill can send health data to the doctor. C.Nadeau is the first one to design the pill. D.The pill can help monitor patients’ health. 2、What does the underlined word “lousy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Accurate. B.Unimportant. C.Terrible. D.Traditional. 3、What is the Traverso’s attitude to the future of the Wi-Fi pill? A.Pessimistic. B.Unconcerned. C.Worried. D.Optimistic. 4、What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.The Wi-Fi pill is too big for the patients to swallow. B.The pill may help those with other diseases in the future. C.Body temperature is the only one use for the Wi-Fi pill. D.The pill has been used in many ways in medical field. 22.(8分) A primary school in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province has announced it no longer requires parents to sign their children’s homework, which was aimed at getting parents to supervise(监督) their children after school. China Youth Daily comments: Putting an end to the requirement that parents sign off on the homework of their children eases the burden on many parents, as otherwise they would have to do primary school homework after a hard day’s work. But there are worries that if parents stop having to sign off on their children’s homework, the children will not get good grades. However, the most effective way for children to study is to develop their willingness to learn and do their own studies. When doing homework, students practice and hopefully apply what they have learned. It is true that teachers are supposed to check students’ homework and identify their mistakes. But some parents correct their children’s mistakes by themselves when signing off on it. It is the duty of students to do their homework, be responsible for their studies and correct their mistakes. Parents’ supervising their homework, checking their answers and dealing with the harder problems will only make children less aware of their mistakes and encourage them to wait for their parents’ help when they face any problems. Children have to manage their own learning and develop the ability to study by themselves, as competence will not be achieved if a student simply repeats strict tasks in which he is assisted in school by teachers and at home by parents. A delayed satisfaction experiment conducted by Walter Mischel in the 1960s proved that children with better self-discipline(自律) performed better in their studies and interpersonal relationships. There is little doubt that parents’ supervision can make children’s homework better. But it does not give children the chance to practice their ability to solve problems independently. 1、Why does the author mention the primary school’s announcement in the first paragraph? A.To express his doubts. B.To introduce the topic. C.To present an argument. D.To clarify his writing purpose. 2、In the author’s opinion, stopping signing kids’ homework mainly aims to __________. A.ease the burden on many parents. B.help children get good grades. C.increase the kids’ awareness of being responsible for their studies. D.shift(转移) the responsibility of supervising kids’ homework on to teachers. 3、Which of the following can be an effect caused by parents’ stopping signing off? A.Children’s grades will absolutely decrease. B.Children will lose confidence when facing any problems. C.Children will simply repeat rigid tasks so as to practice themselves. D.Children will try to deal with their problems and mistakes by themselves. 4、What is the author’s attitude to parents’ stopping signing kids’ homework? A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Neutral. D.Opposed 23.(8分) Alibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou city government announced the launch of ET City Brain 2.0, a cloud—powered and Al-driven urban traffic-management system that aims to increase the city’s efficiency. After over two years of testing in Alibaba’s home base, ET City Brain has become the new infrastructure (基础设施) for Hangzhou, with a total coverage of 420 square kilometers in area, including over 1,300 traffic lights. Over 200 traffic officers are connected via mobile phones, enabling them to receive real-time alerts on any traffic-related emergencies. In version 2.0, the system will optimize the city’s firefighting abilities by providing key information to firefighters, such as water pressure, the number and position of fire hydrants (消防栓) in a given area, the location of gas pipes and other details they need to know. The information is instant, making the entire firefighting process faster, safer and more accurate. City Brain gives meaning to data. By using AI and advanced algorithms (计算程序), City Brain is able to analyze a large amount of data and turn them into useful information in real-time speed. As a result of City Brain’s ability to predict traffic flow, detect accidents and provide instant feedback, Hangzhou has dropped from 5th to the 57th on the list of China’s most congested cities. Hangzhou is probably the only city that can tell you how many cars are on the street at any given time. In the case of medical emergencies, City Brain is able to change traffic lights, so emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks can head to the scene without interruption, accelerating their arrival time by 49%. Dr. Wang Jian, the head of Alibaba’s Technology Steering Committee who invented the term “City Brain”, said the system is designed to empower a city to act quickly and directly. It is more than just about traffic management. It’s really about how to make city more livable at a time of shrinking natural resources around the globe. “It is a matter of sustainability, while using as little natural resources as possible,” Wang said, “This is just the beginning.” 1、What benefit will ET City Brain bring? A.Lower crime rates. B.Efficient government. C.Less traffic congestion. D.Improved medical care. 2、Which of the following functions of the city Brain is NOT mentioned in the text? A.Predicting traffic flow. B.Giving quick feedback. C.Changing traffic lights. D.Handling traffic accidents. 3、Which of the following best explains “optimize” in paragraph 3? A.Better. B.Practise. C.Operate. D.Emphasize. 4、What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A.ET City Brain 2.0 is a mature version. B.Alibaba targets environmentally-friendly development. C.The government is devoted to improving the system. D.The system can solve the problem of lack of resources. 24.(8分)Brigitte Barthelemy was walking along the seashore just north of France's Bordeaux wine region when she discovered a bottle lying among some seashells.Inside were two pieces of paper. One contained a hand-drawn picture of a seagull, while the other was a message showing how litter in the ocean is often deadly to the water birds. The bottle is the brainchild of George Boorujy. From 2011-2013,the artist dropped over two dozen bottles into the ocean from a Staten Island beach in New York. Each contained an image of a water bird and a message similar to the one Brigitte found.Boorujy says he was inspired to take action after becoming aware of the effect the carelessly thrown plastic has on wildlife. Researchers say that around 90% of seabirds have plastic in their stomachs. Many chicks(雏鸟)die because their mothers unintentionally feed them bits of plastic along with their food.Boorujy hopes his message will raise awareness about the danger that seabirds face.He also enjoys the opportunity to give away his art and create a unique experience for the finder. Over the years, the artist has received calls from lots of people that have discovered his bottles. However, they were all found close to Staten Island, making Brigitte's discovery even more special. No matter how the bottle reached France, its message has had a big influence on Brigitte. She not only plans to be more respectful of the environment but contacted(联系)the local bird association to see how they could help. While receiving a message in a bottle can certainly help inspire people,It should not be necessary to remind us how dangerous our careless habits are for the marine mammals(海洋哺乳动物)and seabirds. So remember to reuse, recycle and most importantly, reduce. 1、Where did Brigitte find the bottle? A.In Bordeaux. B.In New York. C.On a French beach. D.On Staten Island. 2、What docs the bottle found by Brigitte contain? A.A seagull. B.A message. C.Some seashells. D.Some plastic. 3、What made Brigitte’s discovery more special? A.She lived close to Staten Island. B.Something special in the bottle. C.Few people had found the bottles.
