Finally, after years of training and intensive workouts, Deborah Duffey was going to compete in her first high school basketball game. The goals of becoming an outstanding player and playing college ball were never far from Deborah's mind.
The game was against Mills High School. With 1 minute and 42 seconds left in the game, Deborah's team led by one point. Her frequent visits there gave her a passion and respect for the profession. And Deborah began to see a new light in her life.
Currently as a senior in college, Deborah focuses on getting a degree in physical treatment. After she graduates, Deborah plans to use her knowledge to educate people how to best take care of their bodies and cope_with the feelings of hopelessness that she remembers so well.

When we face very real dangers to our survival, it is invaluable. However, few of the “tigers” we face in our lives pose (造成) a serious physical threat to our existence.They cause us no end of stress, triggering (引发) the full activation of our fight or flight response. They tend to cause us to overreact to the situation in a counterproductive way. It is counterproductive to hit someone (the fight response) or run away (the flight response).
By recognizing the symptoms，we can begin to take steps to handle the stress overload. By learning to recognize the signals of fight or flight activation, we can avoid reacting excessively (过度地) to events and fears that are not life threatening. In so doing, we use this extra energy to help us, borrowing the beneficial effects in order to change our emotional environment and deal productively with our fears, thoughts and potential dangers.

A recent report, which examined in detail the reading habits of primary school children, showed that even seven­year­old boys and girls have clear views about what they want to read. Girls, in general, read more, and far more girls than boys preferred reading stories. Boys were showing a taste for the more instant appeal of picture stories, or else books about their hobbies.
These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers. Apparently girls read more in general, but more fiction in particular. You could say that there are more opportunities for girls to read fiction: magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their early teens, and by their late teens they have probably moved on to the adult women's magazines. Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their hobbies: motorcycles, heavy transport and so on.
Adult reading tastes are also the subject of research. Again the number of women who read for pleasure is considerably higher than the number of men. It seems that the majority of women still want love stories. There has also been some analysis of what men actually read. Apparently only 38 percent of men read anything, but 50 percent of what they read is fiction in the form of action­packed (情节起伏跌宕的) stories of space or gunmen.

(2016·陕西省质量检测二)Whether it is elementary school, middle school, or high school in the United States, there will always be an awards ceremony at the end of the year. Though it varies from school to school, there are a few that are given by most schools across the nation.
The first one is given from grades 3 to 8 and it is the Honor Roll Award. In elementary and middle school, this award is used to recognize academic excellence. This award is also separated into two groups: A Honor Roll and A/B Honor Roll. It is given out at the end of a school year and students who receive all averages of a 93 or above (90 in some states) on a final report card receive an A Honor Roll, and students with grades above 85 (80 in some states) would receive an A/B Honor Roll. It is to reward students who have worked hard and received all A's or A's and B's.
In high school, this is changed a bit, but still can be classified as the same type of award. The difference is that instead of using the scale (等级) of 100, they use a grade point average (GPA) based on a 4 point scale. They recognize students with a high GPA as “Honor Students”. If the student keeps it up for all four years of high school, then they graduate with honors.
Another notable award is the President's Award for Educational Excellence. This is given by the President's Education Awards Program each year to students all over the United States. This award is offered to elementary school, middle school and high school students. To be eligible (有资格的) for this award, middle school and elementary school students must earn an average grade of 90 or above on a 109 point scale. High school students must have a GPA of at least 3.5. Students must also have a high score on a statewide or national standardized test or have a recommendation from a teacher. Usually this award is given at the end of the year. It is a certificate with a signature from the president along with a letter of recognition.
However, many people confuse the President's Award for Educational Excellence with another award, the US Presidential Scholars Program. Even though both have the word “President” in the title, they are completely different awards. Where the President's Award for Educational Excellence is relatively easy to achieve, the award from the Presidential Scholars Program is not. To earn the honor of being a Presidential Scholar, a student must be a high school senior last year of high school with outstanding standardized test scores.
