Q: Why is it important to recycle?
A: There are many reasons. Recycling is one way to keep waste out of landfill. Landfills are unpopular because they can pollute the soil used to cover them, on top of which new homes may eventually be built. The fewer landfills we have, the less polluted the environment will be. Recycling also reuses valuable raw materials — such as aluminum and paper. Recycling raw materials means that we don't have to mine for and process new materials which often damages the environment. Of course, the more raw materials we recycle, the more we will have in the future. Finally, recycling can mean a lower garbage bill. Recycling lowers the amount of waste put into landfills, which means fewer landfills and therefore, less money that people have to pay for garbage disposal.

Now you buy milk and other products in plastic bottles or cardboard cartons. A: Firstly, no, people are not recycling enough; many more people need to make it a habit. Now, and in the future, we must recycle more. We must recognize that it is wasteful and dangerous to throw away so many reusable things. We can save a lot of energy and resources by recycling.

It is my honor to welcome you all to celebrate International Tourist Guides' Day, which is an initiative of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, and it is held on 21 February each year.
In 1990 when it was held for the first time, 15 countries participated. Since then, tourist guides in an ever-growing number of countries have been giving their good services to their local communities, conducting tours for the disabled, children and the general public.
The importance of the tourist guide to the tourism industry cannot be underestimated. The tourist guide is the first person to make contact with the visitor who sets foot on our shores. Many people return to our shores because of the tourist guides' good service. The tourist guide, in many instances, fulfils the role of an unofficial ambassador (大使) of the nation.
On this day, my Department in partnership with Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has ventured in highlighting the plight of illegal guiding in the Province. During the course of the day, the National and Provincial Tourist Guide Registrars together with the staff members of the two Departments visited Table Mountain and the Nelson Mandela Gateway. They requested tourist guides to produce their ID cards and badges in order to prove their legal status (身份). Those that failed to produce their cards and badges were issued with warning letters to enable them to register with the registration office.
In conclusion, the day's activities have led to this dinner function here at Suikerbossie, where we are celebrating and recognizing tourist guides in the Tourism Industry.
