1. How did Baker use to feel about English courses? Why?
(He had been bored by everything associated with English courses. He found English Grammar dull and difficult. He hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for him to write.)
2. When did Baker have the idea of becoming a writer and when did the possibility take hold?
(He had this idea when he was a child in Belleville, but it wasn’t until his third year in high school that the possibility took hold.)
3. What did Baker hear about Mr. Fleagle?
(He had a reputation for dullness and inability to inspire. He was said to be very formal, rigid and hopelessly out of date.)
4. What was his own impression of his new English teacher?
(To the author he looked to be sixty or seventy and excessively prim. He wore primly severe eyeglasses and prim suits, his wavy hair was primly cut and primly combed. He had a primly pointed jaw, a primly straight nose, and a prim manner of speaking that was so correct, so gentlemanly, that he seemed a comic antique.)
5. What was the topic that held his attention? And what mental images did the topic produce?
(The topic "The Art of Eating Spaghetti" held his attention. Vivid memories came flooding back of a nigh in Belleville when all of us were seated around the supper table----Uncle Allen, my mother, Uncle Charlie, Doris, Uncle HaI--- and Aunt Pat served spaghetti for supper.)
6. For what purpose did Baker want to write about the topic"The Art of Eating Spaghetti"?
(He wanted to write about it for his own joy, not for Mr. Fleagle because he wanted to recapture and hold for himself.)
7. What did Baker think Mr. Fleagle would do if he were to write the essay the way he wanted? Why?
(He thought Mr. Fleagle would surely give it a failing grade because it would violate the rules of formal composition he’d learned in school.)
8. What did Baker turn in the next morning? Why not write something else for Mr. Fleagle?
(He had to turn in his tale of the Belleville supper because when he finished it the night was half gone and there was no time left to write a proper, respectable one for Mr. Fleagle.)
9. What was Baker prepared for when he found all the papers were given back but his?
(He was preparing himself for a command to report to Mr. Fleagle immediately after school for discipline.)

(He was reading Baker’s essay to the class and the entire class was listening attentively and then laughing with open—hearted enjoyment.)

(It means that Mr. Fleagle made his happiness complete by adding his praise, saying, “Now that, boys, is an essay, don’t you see. It’s of the very essence of the essay, don’t you see. Congratulations, Mr. Baker.”)
12. How do you understand the title “Writing for Myself”? And what did Baker think of his writing?
(I think writing for myself is to write what I enjoy writing about. He thought he wrote what he really enjoyed writing about so it was interesting and powerful.)
13. How do you understand the sentence “In the eleventh grade, at the e1eventh hour as it were, I had discovered a calling.”?
(It means that in my eleventh grade, and one night say at the last possible moment, I had found something I wished to take up as a career.)
14. Do you think that Mr. Fleagle plays an important role in the author’s school career and his future work? Why or why not?
(Yes, I think so because it was Mr. Fleagle who helped the author grow up and know the very essence of the essay—to write what one enjoys writing about, which made his idea of becoming a writer possible. What’s more, at the last possible moment, in Mr. Fleagle’s class, he found something he wished to take up as a career, which would be a turning point in his life.)

1. As a summer job the author used to cut Mr. Ballou’s lawn, but Mr. Ballou never seemed to have any money to pay for it. So what did Mr. Ballou finally give the author for his job？How did the author read the first book that Mr. Ballou gave him?
(Mr.Ballou recommended the author good books and in return the author continued to cut Mr. Ballou’s lawn. The author was absorbed in the first book and he found it was impossible for him to put it down, so he stayed up till he finished the book. )
2. How do you understand the last sentence of the passage ---Summer Reading “A good book, if it arrives before you at the right moment, in the proper season, at an interval in the daily business of things, will change the course of all that follows”?
(Reading enriches people’s mind. Reading good books is always profitable for people and sometimes good books can change the direction of people’s life. )
