Sea cucumber Sea cucumbers are strange animals living at the bottom of the sea. They wear brown or pale green coats with many sticks up. They are good swimmers and like swimming near boats, waiting to be fed. They have sharp teeth to catch fishes. When they are young, they live in groups. However, when they grow up, they prefer to live alone. Cuttlefish A cuttlefish can swim quite fast, so it is also called rocket (火箭) fish. It has eight arms and two feelers on its head, just around its mouth. It ejects ink (喷墨) when it is in danger. Its meat is delicious, and it is often the first choice for many people. Octopus An octopus has long arms, with which to catch food and protect itself. When it is sleeping, one or two of its arms are still on duty, keeping moving. Once it feels something dangerous, it can wake up at once to take action. 21. Sea cucumbers stay deep to sleep in summer because they  . Aristotle〔亚里士多德〕, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.〞 In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier. The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future that we fail to enjoy the present, for example, getting into college or getting a good job. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives. Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes. 24. The best title of this passage is ___________. A. Good Friends Make You Happy B. The Secret of Happiness C. Money Makes You Happy D. Ideas for Helping Other People to Be Happy 25. The passage gives us ___________ pieces of advice on happiness. A. one B. two C. three D. four 26. The writer thinks that ___________. A. It’s wrong to spend time on work B. hobbies take up too much time C. everyone knows how to live a happier life D. doing good things for someone can make you happier 27. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage A. Reading a good book. B. Traveling to a foreign country. C. Playing a sport. D. Spending time with close friends. C “Why do birds sing〞 I asked a group of children. “To attract metes(配偶)!〞 answered a boy. A 4-year-old girl added shyly, “birds sing because they are happy, and they want to make us happy, too.〞 I think both answers are probably true in a way. If birds sing happily, it shows all is well in the forest: no predators (捕食者) are present, and the birds can feed, sing and do other bird things. The sound of a relaxed robin(知更鸟) singing is easy to understand because it makes us feel this way too—it’s a sound that lifts our own hearts when we hear it. What happens when a predator comes into their areas The nearby birds quickly give an alarm(警报) call, a short sound that warns, “Danger is coming!〞 On hearing the sound, the other birds stop singing and fly for cover, the deer lift their heads and stop moving and the rabbits run into the bushes. Suddenly, the forest becomes silent. When humans walk through the woods in a hurry or while talking with a friend, we don’t see much wildlife. We may think that there aren’t many animals living there, but more likely, they know we are coming and hide minutes before our arrival. But if we learn to avoid setting off alarms, we can see many more wild animals without frightening them. To practice, find a place in a park and sit quietly for an hour. Take note as the birds begin to relax and sing again. When I do this, I am always surprised at the wonderful thing animals will do when humans simply stay still long enough. 28. In the writer’s opinion, the children’s answers to his question are________. A. reasonable B. funny C. honest D. important 29. Hearing a bird’s alarm call, a deer will _________. A. run quickly into the bushes B. stand still with its head up C. lie down on the ground at once D. act as if nothing has happened 30. According to the author, why can’t we see much wildlife in the woods A. Because we come at the wrong time. B. Because we fail to give warnings. C. Because we have set off alarms. D. Because few animals live there. 31. What is the text mainly about A. The life of birds. B. Birds in the forest. C. How birds sing in the forest. D. The messages in birds’ singing. D Each year the Pritzker Architecture Prize (普立兹克建筑奖) goes to a star designer with a long list of attractive buildings around the world. This year’s winner is a little different. Shigeru Ban has designed museums, homes and concert halls. But Ban is best known for a more simple kind of work: the temporary (暂时) buildings for people who became homeless after disasters. Ban may be the only designer in the world who makes buildings out of paper — cardboard paper tubes (管). Ban actually tested the strength of cardboard tubes, and said he was surprised by what he had discovered. He has used them to build temporary buildings in Japan, Haiti, China and elsewhere. “After a disaster, the building material is going to be more expensive,〞 Ban explains. “But the paper tube is actually not a building material. It is cheap and plentiful. We can get the material easily anywhere. And unlike costs for traditional building materials, the price of paper tubes doesn’t jump after an earthquake or flood. The tubes are also lightweight, so you don’t need heavy machines to work with them.〞 Ban started using cardboard paper tubes in the 1980s. At that time he had just graduated from the architecture school, and he was looking for a cheap substitute for wood. So he started reusing the paper cardboard tubes that were left over from rolls of paper in his office. Ban was born in Tokyo and studied architecture in the U.S. before moving back to Japan to start his practice. Some of Ban’s temporary buildings have become permanent (永久), like the paper church he built after the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan. 32. The author uses the first paragraph to . A. raise an argument B. give an introduction C. give an example D. offer a description 33. What is special about Shigeru Ban A. He failed to get this year’s architecture prize. B. He graduated from the best architecture school in the U.S. C. He is good at building houses for homeless people. D. He builds special houses for special groups of people. 34. Why did Shigeru Ban choose cardboard paper tubes A. Because they are cheap and easy to take away. B. Because they are strong and last for a long time. C. Because they are plentiful and look very beautiful. D. Because they are common and hard to break. 35. What does the underlined word “substitute〞 probably refer to A. A new way of building houses by using wood. B. A new method of producing cardboard paper tubes. C. A new kind of building material to take the place of wood. D. A new machine to produce a new kind of building material. 第二节 (共5小题;每题2分,总分值10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处最正确选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It is important for you to be a good listener in class .__36 ____.
