Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He was a quiet child who spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. When Albert was five years old, his father gave him a compass(指南针). The child was filled with wonder when he discovered that the compass needle always pointed in the same direction ---to the north. He asked his father and uncle what caused the needle(指针) to move.
Albert did not like school. The German schools of that time were not pleasant. Students couldn’t ask questions. Albert said he felt as if he were in prison.
In 1905, Albert Einstein published some important papers in a German scientific magazine.They included one of the most important scientific documents in history. It explained what came to be called his "Special Theory of Relativity (相对论)".Ten years later he expanded it to a "General Theory of Relativity".
In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was given to him not for his theories of relativity, but for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect(光电效应).
Albert Einstein left Germany in 1933. He moved to the United States to continue his research.Einstein became a citizen of the United States in1940.
Einstein was a famous man, but you would not have known that by looking at him. His white hair was long and wild. He wore old clothes. He showed an inner joy when he was playing his violin or talking about his work. Students and friends said he had a way of explaining difficult ideas using images that were easy to understand.
Einstein spent the last twenty-five years of his life working on what he called a " unified field theory". He hoped to find a common mathematical statement that could tie together all the different parts of physics. He did not succeed.
Albert Einstein died in 1955 at the age of seventy-six.

Last week I ran into an old friend, Helen, and it was lovely to catch up on all the things that we had experienced since since then and to recall our school and college days. We had taken quite different paths and this was one of the reasons why we hadn’t stayed in touch with each other, the main one being that she had moved to the other side of the world.
While I had chosen to stay in my hometown, she had decided to win a medical scholarship to a medical college in the UAE, when she later got a dental(牙科的) scholarship and went to one of the best dental schools. After graduation, she went on a successful dental practice, and she had two dentists helping her.
We then began to discuss our old teachers, who were strict but fair compared with many of today’s teachers. In our school days bodily punishment was only just going out of fashion and new laws were coming into effect, though they were too late to help us. Thankfully we both had been good students generally and rarely had to feel the pain caused by the ruler. But teachers in modern schools have to be a lot braver than in our time because many children are advised to be respected and punishment of children is forbidden, and as a result, you will find teachers have to face rudeness, teasing and even attack.
Heavy work, low salaries, little opportunity for promotion, and the rising cost of living, it is no wonder that the number of people choosing a career in teaching has become smaller in recent years.
We both agree that education should be valued and our future will depend on the children.

We have all had the experience of having really good friends in our lives and one day we wake up and the friends have begun to become jealous of us. Everyone gets jealous from time to time and that is normal. Having a healthy jealousy(妒忌) of others can serve to motivate us in our attempts and also in learning about ourselves, but we need to be willing to admit having the feeling. Unfortunately, there are individuals who take this feeling of jealousy to extremes.
There is an old story about crabs(螃蟹) in a barrel. When one crab tries to crawl out, another crab pulls it back down and tries to climb over it to get to the top and another pulls that one back down and so on and so on. No one of those crabs has ever made it to the top. What is the moral(寓意) of this story? Some of our friends or family members are like crabs in a barrel. Not only will they try to pull us down and try to prevent us from reaching the top, but they themselves are not able to reach the top.
You may not be able to change how someone feels about himself, but you can adjust how you contribute to how someone feels about himself and his achievements. Remember, the only person who will have an interest in your dreams and your achievements is you. Others may be happy for you, but don’t expect everyone to fall head over heels in love with your dreams, goals and desires especially if you are succeeding at a much faster rate than they are.
